Ft. Collins Club Triathlon - TriathlonSprint

View Member's Race Log
Ft. Collins, CO
United States
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 15m 29s
Overall Rank = 133/265
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 17/20
Pre-race routine:

Gatorade, protein bar, coffee, banana
Event warmup:

Hit the restroom at least 3 times... I'll make sure to eat a better breakfast next time.
Swim
  • 08m 19s
  • 450 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was pretty nervous about the swim. I was scared that someone would catch me and I would hold them up. As it turned out, I had drastically improved my swim time and absolutely shocked myself in the pool by shaving off almost 3 minutes from my swim time. On top of that, I could have pushed it harder.
What would you do differently?:

No regrets here... just keep up the training.
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

I was a little awkward getting my shoes on and could have been a bit smoother overall.
What would you do differently?:

I'll lay out my towel directly in front of my bike w/ my shoes so I don't have to reach in between bikes to get my gear.
Bike
  • 39m 54s
  • 13 miles
  • 19.55 mile/hr
Comments:

1 - I gotta start riding to work... 35 miles to work would help my endurance immensely.

2 - I gotta get a road bike... Too many people on road bikes passed me that I should have been able to hold off. This will have to wait until next year though, so I'll have to settle for just getting better on the bike for now.

3 - If I can get competitive while on my mountain bike.... watch out!!
What would you do differently?:

Pace myself a little bit better
Transition 2
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

I decided at the last minute to wear socks on the run which meant digging them out of my bag and wasted about 45 seconds
What would you do differently?:

Lay my socks out w/ my shoes. I could probably save some more time by getting some shoestring toggles too.
Run
  • 23m 33s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

The first 1.5 miles were awful. My legs were absolutely dead. I probably could have taken it a little easier on the bike to get a significantly better run time. Had to walk briefly to get a stitch out of my side because I drank too much water at the end of the bike.

When my legs finally began loosening up, I noticed that I was gaining on a guy in a white shirt and black shorts. I picked up the pace and felt my heart rate sky rocket. About 1/2 a mile to go there was still about 150 meters between the two of us and several spectators encouraged me to "Go get that dude!!" Next thing I know, I'm reeling this guy in, but he can hear me coming and the race was on. The last quarter mile was brutal and we finished the foot race in an all out sprint. We crossed the finish line with him just barely ahead, shook hands and I promptly puked in the nearest bush.
What would you do differently?:

Add some bricks to my workouts!!! I started doing them earlier on in training by slacked off pretty quickly
Post race
Warm down:

Puked in the bushes about 6 feet from a girl laying on the ground icing her knee.

I'm all class.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Two things limited me:

1 - Lack of brick workouts. I could have had a MUCH better run time if I had added some bricks.

2 - Having a MTB instead of a road bike. Considering the number of people who were only a 1-2 minutes ahead of me, a road bike would have reversed that and put me 1-2 minutes ahead of them.

Event comments:

I had a blast doing the Ft. Collins Tri. The swim started late, but I really can't complain too much. The rest of the event was top notch. Fantastic competitors and a great way to start the season.

I'm looking forward to moving up placing in the top ten on July 10 when race 2 of the series comes up.

Course: Snake swim in pool. What's this mean? I thought the same thing at first. It's really pretty simple. Everyone has to estimate their swim time when they register. The fastest person enters the pool first, 10 seconds later, the next person starts and that continues until everyone has swum. Once in the pool, you swim to the end of the land and duck under the rope while turning the opposite direction.

Great Race!!!!   Those are some pretty fast times - if you can do 19 mph on a mtn bike, you'll really kick butt on a road bike next year!  Way to go

Good job Ben....Ya keep pedaling that mtn bike as fast as you can, once you get a road bike you will be ready to apply for Team Discovery, you know they need a replacement for Lance next year. I envy your run time, great job!
See ya soon..

Nice race! I'll go along with the others and say that's a pretty nice bike time, especially on the MTB. Way to reel that guy in at the end, even if you didn't catch him. I think the bushbarf was my favorite part, though. Gives a whole new meaning to leaving it all on the course! Good work all around.

Thanks guys!! I can't wait for the next race. Training is fun, but racing... Ohhh boy. It's like healthy crack.

Ryan - do you recall where we can go to check out the pictures that they were taking during the race?

Great race! I can't believe your mph average on a mtn bike!!! A lot of us can't average that with fancy aero roadbikes. You'll be a force to be reckoned with when you get a road bike!

I really wish I could have done that race - it would have been a good first tri for me.

Wow. You had a great day; those times are quite impressive. If you are a woman 45-49 years old, please don't enter races in northern Louisiana.

Very well done.

Uhhhh... I'm not sure how to take that

I'm a male, 30 years old. Although, if I could race in the female 45-49 age group, I might have a slim chance of placing (emphasis onthe slim chance)

I think my ego may have just received a crushing blow

Found the pics, but you'll have to sort through about 500 of them to find one of yourself.

No dude, she was saying she thinks you're cute fast

Great race.  Road bikes are overrated.  Don't get one.  Save your money.  If you race me, I think you should wear hiking boots for ankle support.  Heavy ones
