ouradventure - 2009-10-01 9:10 AM I'm kindof torn about doing it this summer. I did the sprint, the peak, and then Harvest Moon for my first HIM. One thing I didn't like about the 5430 series was the fact that you had to go to Boulder the Sat. before for packet p-u. Kindof an inconvenience to go up there. My husband and boys ended up just renting a room Sat. and staying up there through Sunday after the race, but it's pricey when you add it all up! Now that I think about it, I think I'm actually going to skip the series and do other tris that I haven't done yet. I love how many different tris there are in this state, so it would be fun to try them all out. Like others have mentioned, I don't really feel the need to do a branded "70.3" race. So, I will probably do Harvest Moon again b/c it's smaller, closer, and I already know the course!

I agree -- with new management this may not be an issue but they will probably do this the same way since it's a fairly large race.  Harvest Moon offered the option of mailing packets and I really appreciated that.

Kath2163 - 2009-10-01 9:42 AM Can anyone chime in about the Boulder course?  I am thinking about doing my first 70.3 and while I know there is mixed feelings about the change in director/management,  I would be curious to hear what people think about the course. I know the run has no shade and has a few hills?  What is the bike course like?   I don't know if there really is an answer to this and it really depends on the person but I will ask it anyway.  Would it be a good course for someone's first HIM?
Thanks!

You should just go ride the course -- it's been saved on BT by several people in Routes.  I did Harvest Moon as my 1st HIM and the Long Course as my 2nd.  They both have hot boring runs and fairly flat fast bikes, imo.  Weather for HM has been much cooler than for LC the last 2 years.

eta: LC does 2 loops for bike and run; HM does 1 loop for bike and out and back for run.

Yes, it would be good for a first HIM. It is Colorado and therefore not completely flat, but there is nothing really difficult. If you've done all the races listed in your race log, it wouldn't be much different on the bike than the Loveland race, except about twice as many miles.

If Harvest Moon was moved up a few weeks so weather was not likely to be a factor, I'd be doing that.

Mollyland - 2009-09-30 8:03 PMI will do both Boulder 70.3 AND Harvest moon if you do Matt!
mcgilmartin - 2009-09-30 9:01 PMOK, so $325 for three races isn't bad. But I love the Without Limits folks. How much of a gap is there between IM Boulder and HM? Maybe just fewer, but tougher races for this old body next year.
LOL- are you going to run for me in both of them, Molly?

I'm also looking at trying my first 70.3 next summer and it's good to see some of these responses.  I've only done 3 sprints so far (so take anything I say with a grain of salt) but one was the off road race put on by Without Limits up in Ft Collins. It was a lot of fun and well put together, but having grown up on the front range Aurora just isn't high on my list of places to go.  Boulder sounds fun but I'll wait and see if the race is still open in the spring. Are there any other good 70.3 races that you folks recommend in the area? I'd really like to find something up in the hills?

Eddie, a couple of other BT'ers and I did Redman in OKC in September. It's a great race and a perfect venue for a first 70.3. I'd highly recommend it- although the weather was brutal this year.

I live outside Glenwood and have not heard or known of anything longer than oly "in the hills."

The Boulder Half IM was great when I did it in 2007, and you would like the run which is on dirt.
Aspen has a great short tri (not really sprint or oly) where the ride goes up to Maroon bells, the swim is in the pool which I did not like, sort of lame but still just fyi......

Have you checked out the Colorado Triathlon website?

Cheers
Stacy

I am doing the Boulder 70.3 as my first 1/2.  I don't want to have to spend a lot to travel for races so this is the one I chose.   By the time HM rolls around, I will have moved on to fall marathon training!

I wish I had known this race existed before signing up for FL 70.3, but I was also wondering if I could maybe to both.  They're three months apart and FL will be my first. Thoughts?

Boulder will make Florida seem much easier.   I think 3 months is plenty.  Give you a month (if needed) to recover, then a month and a half  (or more) of solid training again if you feel you weren't prepared as well as you should have been for one sport or another, plus another 2 weeks of tapering again.

Plus after doing Boulder in the altitude, FL should be cake (relatively speaking)

Florida will be hot and humid and potentially rough weather wise.    I've not done the 70.3, but i have done a couple other races on the same course and it'll be hot and muggy.   the run is partly off-road and can be humid running in grass and along those canals.   if you aren't use to the humidity, just be prepared to properly hydrate leading up to the race.

saying that, 3 months should be plenty....assuming you've trained and prepared properly.   coming from someone who lived in Central Fla all their life up to 3 months ago, prepare for Fl 70.3 with nutrition in mind.

Unfortunately Florida is first, but I do get the added benefit of being in Colorado for several months before the race.  I lived on the Florida panhandle for two years, not looking forward to the humidity.  Crossing my fingers for unseasonably cold.  Maybe I should run indoors near a sauna a lot. Haha, If I could set that up I would. There's a treadmill in the pool room I'm planning on swimming in when I get back to Colorado.  That's my plan at least.

I'm in for the Boulder 70.3, after doing the Boulder Peak this year, I am going to do the whole series this year.  $325 for all 3 races isn't too bad, and then I will consider HM as a tuneup/training for IMAZ (I am going after a slot tomorrow at 12 noon, when next year's registration opens up...I hope it doesn't sell out quickly)

I did FL 70.3 in 2006 and it was a great course but the temp was 98 during the run.

I think I'm going to sign up for the series, I'm just trying to psych myself up for it. I did Harvest Moon last year, and am interested to compare that experience with the IM-branded race experience.

I've had crappy races the past two years at Boulder Peak, and I swore I wasn't going to do BP again this year, which is pretty much the only thing holding me back from signing up. But I kind of figure that the first crappy race was due to knee pain that has since been surgically repaired, and the second crappy race was due to a major bonk on the run, so I'm due for a good race, right? Third time's the charm and all that...

I signed up this week for the Series. It will be my first HIM.
I also dragged out my bike trainer last night since the windchill is 20 below and I have 10 inches of snow in my yard.

I'm with you baldbuyer.

I'm all signed up for the series.  I'll sign up for HM again once registration opens.  Then it's just a matter of keeping the bike on the road as long as possible before IMAZ.  Hopefully the weather cooperates next year for us.

I'm trying to figure out my plan of attack as far as training goes though.  10 weeks between HM and IMAZ is enough to recover, get a real good training push in and then taper. But it's also long enough to lose a good deal of fitness. I'm worried about my bike fitness degrading during that time period because of the loss of daylight, snow and colder conditions.  I'm hoping to be in IM shape by HM time... maybe then just hang on and manage to get just a fraction better in those last 10 weeks?

Still haven't signed up, but I'm 99% sure that I will before the price jump on 1/31.

I've done the Peak twice, but haven't done the Sprint or Long Course before. I have done a 70.3, though, Harvest Moon this past season.

The registration on the Active.com site says that the price goes up on 1/31/10 but on the website it says 12/31/10.  Just an FYI.
From the website...
BOULDER TRI SERIES (INDIVIDUALS ONLY)
$325 (October 1, 2009-December 31, 2009)
$385 (January 1, 2010-April 30, 2010)
$450 (May 1- close)

Hmmm. I knew I had been thinking it was 12/31 for a reason, but when I checked the other night, I saw Active had it listed as 1/31. I should probably just do it and get it over with...
