A little background..

38 years old 6'2" 245 and I have been doing endurance events for about 2 years including a HIM this past April.

This is my question. My heart rate is really quite high when I exercise. For instance my average heart rate for the HIM was 168 for 8 hours.

I know this isn't normal. For me this was never uncomforatble and I never was really breathing all that hard. I only get uncomfortable and breathe heavy when my heart rate gets up to about 190, that seems to be when I start having belly cramps too.

I can sustain a 180bpm heart rate comfortably for hours.

Anything faster than a 10 minute mile and here come the cramps and heart rate above 190.

My resting pulse is around 60 and my blood pressure is normal.

Anyone else like that here? Any idea what that means? Am I some super-efficient cardio machine?

At 40 yo:

MRHR: ~40
Oly HRs: swim ?, bike 175+, run 185+
HIM HRs: swim ?, bike 170+, run 175+
IM HRs: pretty much 160 across the board

I was talking to a friend who was an RN and was told these #'s might indicate a problem.  In my case, tests had confirmed it was not a problem and not an advantage - just a high max HR and a low RHR.

Well... not normal for me. Could be quite normal for you.

Everyone's different.

Just for comparison: I'm 28, 5'11", 175 and have been cycling for quite some time.

I can keep a pace of 21-22mph on a flat for several hours or run 7:40-8:00 minute miles for 10-13 miles and my heart rate will be around 150-155. At 170 I'm getting pretty close to maximum effort and can't do that too long. I think I've seen 180 once or twice, but that's pedal to the floor and redline for me. Resting HR is around 45.

For me high 150's is long run, marathon, IM pace, 160's is pushing it make me go boom on IM, can probably hold it for a Mary, 170's I best be within a few miles of the finish line, 180 I best be able to see the finish line, 190 I best be close to an ambulance.

HR should come down as fitness goes up for the same pace.  You may be pushing too hard too fast.   This is kind of suported by your belly cramps if not relate to hydration and nutrition timing.  No medical doctor here, but you might want to talk to one, 190 ouche that is like seeing spots and feeling my heart pound out about 2 feet on each beat and looking around for a bear while carying a small car on my back.

There is normal human variation, the farther above 175 you get during sustained exercize (hours) I would probably be wanting reassurance from a doctor.

You should do some HR zone testing to set zones instead of guessing what is normal or comparing yourself to others. What others HR is doesn't matter.

Mike Ricci has written a number of articles and posts on how to test HR you should read.
