Subject: Road warrior office woes
I'm usually a one week on the road, one week at home business traveler, but this last stretch, I traveled 5 out of the last 6 weeks. Today is my first day back in the office and it looks like a bomb went off. I've just been dumping stuff from the previous trip and grabbing what I need for the next one. I've been sorting and cleaning since 8:30am and I'm just now getting to the actual work of following up on previous trips and planning the next batch and dealing with emails that I let go last week knowing I was in the office this week.

Does this happen to others who spend much of their working time traveling?

I guess the way I justify 4 hours of office cleaning is that I would usually spent 10 minutes a day at the end of the day and a half hour on Friday afternoons cleaning/organizing my desk/office if I was office bound all the time. That would add up to an hour an 10 minutes a week, so really 4 hours for 6 weeks isn't that bad. It just seems like it when it's done all at once.

I hear ya.  I usually spend my entire Monday follwing a few weeks on the road taking care of business...expense reports, pre and post trip reports, etc.

But, because most of my work is done on the road, the rest of my week in the office is usually spent screwing around (reading BT).  I, unfortunately, cannot work from home (just yet...maybe in another year).

*Note added to say I'm not a total slacker.  I do spend a lot of time trying to better myself by reading books and creating training materials that can be used by other team members.

I hear ya. I'm impressed you can get that stuff done in 4 hours. A week out of the office for me generally means at least a day getting caught up on office stuff. Mostly emails that I couldn't take care of on the road.

Had a 3 day trip a while back where I couldn't get email. Took me a day just to get through them and prioritize them. So, I quit my job and I'm hoping it will take a while for all the email in the new job to build back up.

I think you all misunderstood. I didn't spend 4 hours getting caught up. I spent it actually cleaning. Like, I couldn't see my desk before I started, cleaning.

I feel your pain. I have been on the road solid for the last 4 weeks, spending the next two in the office. I did 22 flights over 4 weeks. I was so drug out when I got here Monday I didn't get squat done.

Thankfully I have a week of vacation coming up at the end of October.

I don't share your problem.  Because I'm on the road 80% of the time, I don't even have an official desk at my office.  When I'm there, I just grab one that is open.

usually i'm like that...but today i got in for the first day in a week and my office was immaculate.  desk dusted, floor vacuumed, no pile of mess on the desk.  of course, i've been here for 4 whole hours and it's a mess again.

i never bother with travel expenses while on the road - that's something reserved for killing time during meetings - and i think i may have missed a bill payment because of it.  whoops?

but i don't care - i go on vacation saturday.  that's right, batches.

My office is the spare room in our house. If I actually go to our office in Philly, I get to use the conference table. That is a once a year occurrence. The rest of the time we meet at the larger national conferences and trade shows that the whole executive/sales staff attend.

I guess I shouldn't be complaining, my job setup is pretty damn sweet.

Hehe, quit ya QQing!

I'm on the road 3 out of 4 weeks a month.  Been that way for 5 years now.  I like the freedom of the open road, the wind in my hair blah blah blah.  I am slightly lucky that I get Fridays in my office...when I don't get kicked out by the Lost Prevention managers when they bust internal thefts.  Meah.

Best advise would be to stay organized.  No 'dumping' and running!  You will only create a larger mess for yourself later.

Okok, except for the dry cleaner.  I dump and run there all the time!
