Pre-race routine:

This was my first ever 1/2 marathon. Originally I wanted to go sub 1:40, but with some help from the bro-in-law we determined sub 1:35 made more sense and agreed to try and pace at 4:25 per km

Start time was at 8AM. Got up at 6, had breakfast, got dressed and took the shuttle to start line. This went smoothly. It was cold (2c). The bro-in-law lent me some old clothes I could peal off at the last second and throw away. In the future I am going to keep old stuff with holes just for these occasions.
Event warmup:

None.

Who needs to warm up when it's 2 degrees outside. That's tropical.
Run
  • 1h 33m 39s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 04m 26s  min/km
Comments:

It is a good race for me. Pretty steady pace and HR.
Garmin says the race was 21.5KM and pace 4:22 per KM.
Fastest KM was 4:10, many around 4:20, slowest were 4:35 & 4:38 on the uphill on the last 2KM.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
I came off my last tri in September and wanted to do something different. But I don't think I did enough mileage.

My Bro-In-Law who is a very knowledgeable and high performance runner helped me a lot to find my pace for my first half marathon.
Post race
Warm down:

Non. Just walked to the mid point of the marathon to see the bro-in-law and the Kenyans. Man those guys fly.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training. I only put in 1 month of training and even then it was limited.

I focused on the bike this summer and the volume for sprints and Oly is not enough to be tip-top- shape for a fast 1/2 marathon.

But the result is fine for a first half.I am a happy camper

Event comments:

Organization was incredible. First class all the way

It was a good first half marathon. I learned a ton of little tricks from the bro-in-law. He's da best.

This race allowed me to know what it's like to run the 21k (13m) race. I learned a lot about my HR and pacing.

Driving back to Montreal (6 hours) after a half was not a brilliant idea. My knees are killing me.

Performance: Good
Pretty steady heart rate from 161 to 173. I suspect my Garmin is showing a less than actual HR by maybe 5 to 10 beats. I was happy with my ability to keep my HR flat or a very slow rise. I managed KM 12-17 by HR when I knew I would hit my time. I just wanted to finish.
Course: Rolling hills. One brutal climb at 5km, some rolling hills and finish on an up 2km. But a really nice downhill at 10km. Properly pacing the hills, after the bro-in-law's advice saved my butt.

Excellent job man!! Sub 1:35 on a first half mary is stellar!!! Even more on a hilly course.

Thanks

Yes, I am from Montreal but went to Toronto since it's one of the few half marathons this time of year.

I train on Mt-Royal, so hills are no stranger to me :-) We need to get all the BTers from the area on the mountain for a run and bike one of these days.

Absolutely! That or a spin on the trainer on a rainy/snowy afternoon.
