my only concern with 4:30 is that bike check in starts at 2:00 and I don't know if there will be a log jam in that process making it tough to get back downtown, what do yall think?

I'm sure everyone has rooms already. But on whim I choose to try priceline instead of staying at a friends and just booked the Courtyard Marriott for $40 each night. Avg. rate there is $205 per night.

So if you haven't booked yet try priceline!!!

armand69 - 2010-04-09 6:10 PM quoting the bear "Not sure what's blasphemous about Italian in New Orleans. The city has a rich Italian cultural and culinary heritage.

In the Quarter, Irene's is supposed to be really good, Bacco's is as good as or better than the Bourbon house and run by the same family, Maximo's was a fun place when I lived there. Tony Moran's on Bourbon used to be good, though I think it's gotten a little touristy.

If you want venture out of the Quarter, a bunch of us BTers ate at Mandina's last year, good food at moderate prices. Maybe we can see about getting a group together again this year?"

i'm coming into nola for race weekend from lafayette on friday evening (a couple hours away) and staying with family who lives there.....i'd love to meet and eat with yall.......let's keep talking it up and see what comes of it........is the concensus italian cuisine with other lighter fare on the menu? I'll ask my aunt.....in addition once i get my bike to transition my vehicle can carry up to 7, so that would be 4 extra seats after my daughter, wife and I.  We'd love to be of help.

If you haven't been to New Orleans (or have only been to the Quarter) y'all need to GET OUT OF THE QUARTER and see/taste the rest of the city.  Domenica is amazing (another John Besh restuarant) and surprisingly economical/close to the Quarter).  There's also Nonna Mia in Mid City/Esplanade Ridge.  Beautiful outdoor setting, not far from the Quarter, and really good (though not fine-dining quality) low priced, pasta, pizza, etc.  Good luck to everyone!  Enjoy my city!

For what it's worth I did an open water swim in the lake right by the course  ( by the wooden piles referenced earlier in the thread ) last week and it was nice. I think the water temp was right about 70 DegF. It was a great swim and the water didn't trigger my gag reflex too many times. So that's a good thing.

Other than that I welcome those coming to New Orleans and hope you have a great race.

If you are wondering who I am I will be the guy coming in dead last...

I may be getting down there a little late.  I may just PM a couple of people my cell number and if they can call me when your heading to dinner I will try to meet you there.  Otherwise I will grab something local to the hotel and watch a little evening TV.

Bike check in on Saturday took me maybe 15 min.    Literally I walked my bike from my car into the transition where the lovely little girl verified my bike # to my wristband and I racked it on my race #, that was it.  I saw some people getting some final touches done to there bikes but I choose to make sure mine is ready to roll and all things are done before I bring the bike.   I spent maybe an extra 30 min just getting a feel for the transition entrance and exits from the swim to the bike exit/ run exit that sorta thing, took a few pics and then I was done.  Hope this helps you out

How spread out are riders on the bike leg? I assume drafting is illegal, but do people tend to ride in groups or spread out?

What do ya'll say to 4:30pm @ Mandina's for Dinner Saturday, let me know who all will be in for that.

I have 2 in my group

Also let me know if you need a ride.

My husband I would love to join for dinner at Mandina's, but I'm not sure if we'll be available by 4:30.  We're driving from Birmingham, AL on Sat.  We're leaving fairly early, but I'll still be doing one of the later packet pickups.

I have to work at 3pm in the Quarter on Saturday and bike check opens at 2pm, so I'm wondering what time you were able to just stroll into the bike check?  Was it close to 2pm or much later in the day?  Can't be late for work.

Last year's race had nearly 3,000 athlete's, so as you can imagine the bike course was fairly packed. However, I did not see any drafting taking place, everyone seemed to keep good spacing between riders. There were several officials on motorbikes patroling the course.

Good luck to everyone this weekend
I won't be meeting you all for dinner - just cos I prefer a bit of me-time/ isolation the night before a big race.
Afterwards of course is a different matter - is anyone going to be hanging out at the park for a while?

There will be at least a dozen of us officials out there this year. Last year it was easily the most knowledgeable, experienced, organized crew of officials I ever worked with. The head official does big races like this exclusively and said it was the fewest amount of penalties in any HIM he's worked. Personally I carded three riders on the bike, one of which was a guy drafting a young lady for over two minutes as they wove through dozens of slower cyclists. Warned a couple guys on the run to put their shirts back on but gave no penalties there.

Fun race to work.

Thanks for the info, Bear.  Is it illegal for the guys to take shirts off?  (I'm thinking maybe their bib numbers were on them...?)  I won't even know what you look like even if I do see you out on the course.  All I've ever seen of you is the Bear avatar.

I'm in.  2 in my party.

So... random question... any ladies going down know how to French braid?  My plan for getting my hair done has fallen through and I'm scrambling to find someone to help me out.  I wish I knew how to do it for myself.

Armand, I don't know if I will be able to join you. I have a wife and a little one that will be down here. He is usually a handful. I appreciate the invite though.

Rach, I am sure you won't have trouble finding someone to braid your hair down here.

I hope that is the case.  I told my husband jokingly that I was considering waving a $10 bill in the air at the hotel and calling out "I'll pay someone $10 to braid my hair!"  His response: "I'm sure you would."  Hehe.  Laughing
