Subject: The Importance of Body Marking

.... in my second full year of doing tri's, I never till now realized how important body marking can be sometimes.  When I volunteered at St Anthony's in 2004, they were very specific about the markings, we even had a handout.  Side right arm, front left arm, side left leg in big, plain numbers......  I've done races where they lifted up my bike short, wrote the number and then pulled the short back down again, concealing the number.  What the????    I'm seriously considering buying my own black Magic Marker.

I went to view my pics from a race last weekend.  My pics are of a guy. Um?  Not me. Not even close!  I can't even see his number!  So, curious, plug in Renee's number.  Different dude.  No, not Renee.  Not by a long shot.  Try Tri_Take_Me_Away.  I know she's a chick... again, a dude! Man, hey!  I"m not in the lost and found either.  cursed dial up is too slow anyways to search all of them.  I tried all combinations of my race number that might be figured as (it's 542, tried 541,547, 42, and a handful of others).  Can't search by name.  I could barely make out anyone's number while I was searching these race pics.  Even the ones where I plugged a number in.  grrrrr........

Hope the pics hubby took come out good.  At least this time he got the film loaded properly......

I've been struggling with trying to figure out the best time to put on sunscreen. Before or after body marking? If I put it on before, I don't get burned while setting up transition and being in the body marking line. But the marker seems to have trouble with greased skin. If I put it on after, the sunscreen smears the markings. Either way seems to cause a smeared mess. And I always end up with my age on the back side of my thigh from the calf printing getting on there when I kneel. Anyways, my markings are always quite faded by the time I get to the run.

What I honestly don't get is putting the markings under the bike shorts.  Like you're going to take them off during the race???

Body marking serves these purposes:

- rules/safety
- competition
- photographers

You must have a visible number displayed at any time during the race. That way, if you are Rules/safety: unable to respond to questions from medical staff, they will still be able to radio your number to race staff, and they can look up your particulars. It's great to have a number on your bike, and a number that you wear on the run, because the body markings have often faded by that point. In the swim, the body marking is the only place you'll have a number. If you're wearing an electronic chip, that won't help - first off, if you read the chip the only thing you'll get is a number like 18374659203, and then you would have to have a timing mat handy to even get that. Lastly, if a referee wants your number, and can't read the primary bike or run number, they will look for the body markings.

Competition: age group / clyde / athena / relay team / elite, usually marked on the back of your left calf, let's you know on the bike or the run whether that person is in your age group or not.

Photographers: at the races that have the smaller number for the front of your helmet, that's the primary identifier for getting you to the right spot so you can find your picture. As a secondary, they will look for body markings on the arms or legs, whatever makes it into the picture. So, if you care about viewing the photos, and know that you'll be putting on mid-thigh shorts or a mid-length sleeved shirt for the run, then ask the volunteer bodymarking to put it low enough so it will be visable.

When do you put on sunscreen? After, after, after. Baby oil, and suntan lotion, are excellent for taking off body markings. Actually, almost anything that was an oil-based component to it. If you put any lotion on before marking, that creates a film that the marking won't stick to well. Best thing to do is to allow 5-10 minutes after marking for the ink to dry, and then lotion up - going lightly across the numbers at that point should be fine, just avoid rubbing hard over the numbers. And remember that the ink is a sunscreen in and of itself; if you run a race without enough sunscreen, you'll have an inverse tattoo after the race, when you wash off the ink.

Christine, I checked brightroom.com and found my pics (five of them). Then I typed your number in and guess who has 5 pics!!! You look great, too!

You might have clicked on the tri listed above ours (Mad City somethin' or another). Try it again - you are there!

I have a tattoo on my upper left arm which always confuses the markers, many have just wrote the number over the tattoo- essentially useless you can't read it. But this weekend the gentlemen was smart and just put it under the tattoo, my number was almost to my elbow but you could read it.

What I do not get is when they use a Sharpee for body marking the morning of the race. It does not have time to dry and 1) wears off by the end of the swim 2) ink winds up permanently marking the inside of the wetsuit, I have my age and race numbers from the last two races marked backwards inside my wetsuit.

This thread is incredibly old.  That will help explain it a bit.

Many of those in this thread haven't been around in a LONG time.  And Lucy is no longer with us, unfortunately.
