I did my last long run for Cozy today - 18 miles.

I've been injury free (so far?) all season...

I felt fine DURING the fun (minus the usual "ow my feet and legs are sore" ) toward the end, but when I got home, I noticed some pain in my left knee.

and now it REALLY hurts. I'm having A LOT of trouble bending and straightening it. it only hurts midly when it's bent.

I took 3 ibprofuen and am now praying to the tri gods.

I'm not quite sure how to describe it --- kind of feels like it's "tight" and needs to be oiled, if that makes sense. the pain is centered around the top of my knee.

I guess a doctor's appointment on monday is in order .

Ice and elevate until the swelling is down.  Good luck - how close to the taper.

X2, I would guess that its just a sore knee.  Do you remember a particular time when you twisted it, planted and turned, or heard any kind of pop?

Thanks guys.

I have changed out of my halloween costume and into sweats and am currently trying not to cry, crying, or just stopped crying. it hurts and I'm scared.

I don't remember twisting or popping it or any definitive moment where I said "ow, what was THAT?"

My poor husband was watching me flip out, helping me out of my tights and into my sweats, and telling me that I have a month, that taper starts soon (I'm following BT intermediate plan -- a 3 week taper that starts in a week), and that I'll be fine.

Breathe in.   Breathe out.  You will be fine.   The absolute WORST outcome is, even if you can't run for a month, you will still finish.  Which, in the possibility range,is low on the totem pole.  More likely, you rest up and take care of it and you're running again soon

Take the next few days off, rest, Ice, elevation, and wrap it.

Thanks, guys.

Waiting for the freezer to make more ice (I took an ice bath after my run) and then it's back upstairs to elevate, rest, ice.

Chris, you said to wrap it --- how? where? and how tightly?

Going to try to go to bed early.

thanks for the support. I will try to stop freaking out !

Stay calm, if anything serious happens you will have known it, trust me on this (I've had 4 knee surgeries).  as long as you can still walk, even if its sore and stiff.  You'll be able to race.  Elevate, ice, compress, repeat!  Ice for 20 min. every hour (that you can) try to keep it elevated as much as possible, and go kick butt in Cozy!

You can use an ace wrap for compression.  Don't wrap it super tight or your leg/foot will fall asleep just snug.  Wrap from about 2 inches above your knee cap to 2 inches below where your knee cap tendon inserts into your shin bone.  Do not wrap it and sleep with it that way because your foot will fall asleep.  deep breaths.  Its not critical you wrap it if you don't have an ace wrap.  The ice will hep you  a lot more

No doctor, so...   Whatever compression you can get on it, but as ^^^ said, ice probably helps more.

I don't think there's been a big first race I've gone into where I didn't get injured a few weeks before.   Even told my coach when I hurt my hammy prior to Wildflower last year, "that's just what I do before races"

Ouch... it sounds like something that happened to me. I went on a long two days after the Chicago triathlon. No pain while run, but as soon as I get back to the room and shower, WHAM here comes the pain. Get better!

I use to have that problem with long runs and the next day it would be a tad bit sore but obviously better then as the day went along it would be much better.  Almost like it was just swelling or something.  Wait until morning and see how it feels and keep up the icing.

Ice Ice Ice. I took an ice bath after every long run (beyond 12 miles). I had some new pains like that toward the end too, but the ice helped keep them at bay so they got better in a few days. You will get thru it!!! Have faith.

Also, consider doing Yoga. I love the Rodney Yee Yoga Conditioning for Athletes DVD.

PS: might also try KT Tape. That helped me get thru some terrible neck pain. Oh, and the Chiropractor helped me with that too.

My left knee started bothering me at mile 12 of the MCM last week. After the race I could barely walk because of the pain and stiffness. 2-3 days later I was fine.

Don't panic.

Ice like everyone else said. Last time I had a knee issue the doctor told me to take 2 Aleve in the morning and 2 at night with meals. Do that until Monday and go see a doctor. I was prescribed prednisone one time also to get me better for IronMan New Orleans 70.3. Good Luck!

relax and take a day or so off from running, you probably will feel a lot better.

I've had knee pain, and it scared me too, on the bike and on the run..but it usually goes away after a few days and I'm back again.

Good luck Trish! Do as the good Doc suggests, take the ice to 'er, and you'll hopefully be fine. Be smart about it and we'll keep our fingers crossed for you.

My additional advice- snuggle up with some of those furry critters or the other half with some hot cocoa/tea. and now don't you feel better already?

Take good care!

thanks again, everyone.

It feels a little better this morning, I think.

Question... can I (should I?) swim today? I'm going to skip my 90 min ride, but I'd like to get in the water...

You can try it if you'd like, but listen to your body!  If your knee starts to hurt, stop!  Best of luck! And I hope your recovery is swift!

After some training days/races where I have anticipated lots of knee pain, I've stuck my legs in an ice bath for an hour or so (I know, maybe seeming a little excessive) and I can't tell you how much it helped. If you have the time to make an ice bath, I would definitely recommend it! That can never hurt. Good luck!
