| Hello,
My name is John. I just recently got back into triathlons after spending about 12 years of exclusive running(marathons and shorter races).
I'm very excited and would love to get to know some of you. I signed up for a 70.3 in MIami. I have almost one year to train and will going for a six hour bike fit tomorrow at Elite bikes in Philly.
I work as a sports medicine physician so I'd be happy to contribute if anyone has any injury questions. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions for those of you who are more experienced than I.
I live in York which is in South-Central PA.

| John,
Welcome back to the triathlon arena.. Best of luck to you on your year long training for the 70.3 in Miami. I am new to the triathlon arena and have begun to train for a local triathlon.
After many years of running and working out, I've only had minor injuries. Is there any precautions I need to take starting this additional training?
Thank you! Tish |

Silver member | Welcome to BT John! I think you'll find this site to be a great resource for logging your training, finding training partners and definitely meeting up with people at races.
I live a couple hours north of you in Binghamton, NY but would love to get together to train sometime. I started doing tri's in 2005 with my first sprint race and have gotten the bug to go long and have done 5 IM races since my first IM in 2007. My latest goal to help raise money for our wounded vets is to do a marathon in each state before I'm 50, 6 years and 4 months from now. (I have 7 covered )
Your expertise in sports medicine will help a lot of people on this site. Good luck in your training and I've added you to my friends list. Be sure to PM me or inspire me if you're going to be in the Binghamton area and want to get out for a run, bike or swim. |

| Welcome to BT, John! I'm in State College. Down in the Carlisle area a few times a year though visiting family. Any other races you're thinking about in addition to Miami?
Have a great time at Elite! I've been wanting to go get a bike fit there. I met the Elite guys in Lake Placid this summer and they were great.

| Hey,
I'm new from PA too (also Philly). Not nearly as experienced as you though! Looking forward to doing my first tri in June (trained for it last year but made the fatal mistake of going for a bike ride the day before the race and had a spill that made the run part impossible!). Would love any advice you more experienced people could offer!
Thanks!

| Wow, thanks for the nice reception! Thanks Jenn, Bob, Tish, and Laura. I'm looking forward to sharing our training tips and racing stories.
To answer your question Tish, in my opinion, it is a pretty easy transition to go from running every day to mixing it up with swimming and cycling. I believe you have LESS chance of getting injured since you're cross training. I certainly feel better after a week of doing all three sports in moderation rather than pounding out the long miles of running only.
Bob, thank you for the invitation! I'll have to take you up on that sometime.
Jenn, yes, I'm going to Elite tomorrow for a 6-8 hour bike fit. They make some beautiful bikes and I can't wait to have one in my possession! I haven't signed up for any other triathlons yet. I will be doing the Shamrock half marathon in March. How about yourself?
Thanks all!

It was nice drafting off your feet for a while in the water at Placid Jen. I would train with you any day of the week and if you ever come near Binghamton and don't give me a call I won't let you live it down! |

| Hello!
Nice to meet all of you!
Ann, it's nice to hear there are some "locals" as well. My trip to Elite was fantastic! They were awsome! David(the owner) spent so much time with me and asked tons of questions to make sure we got it just right. Because of my body proportions, they are making a custom frame for me. Apparently, my femur length is a bit shorter when compared to my torso length. The good thing is that I get to pick ANY colors for the bike. I'm so excited! I would highly recommend them to any serious triathlete looking for a beautiful, exceptional bike. Jenn, are you going to the PSU-Ohio State game? Should be great! Go Penn State!! |

| Welcome John!! Hope your training treats you well!!
Since you brought it up, I have an injury question for you. I always have issues with my Achilles tendon and calves. How often and for how long do you recommend foam rolling? I ALWAYS hear different things, and I just like to be well-informed before figuring out what's right for me. Thanks!!
Happy training!! |

| Sounds like the transition to the tri-world will be an easy one....i'm brand new. I am local to you, i'm across the river in Bainbridge. Hoping to arrange some riding in spring with a few others from this site, i added you as a friend and will be sure you get the invite. This site is absolutely amazing and it's a great tool to take advantage of. Happy SBR! JEN |

| Hi Steve,
I would be careful with the foam rollers. Though they can certainly help to break up the adhesions and improve blood flow to the area, they can also do some damage if done to excess. I would recommend doing it no more than every 48 hours. Where does your achilles hurt? How long has it been hurting? Do you know WHY you injured it? Did you happen to change shoes right before it happened? This is a big source of achilles injuries when going from a firm shoe to a softer shoe. I'm not real big on telling patients to stretch injured tendons/muscles unless the injury is more chronic in nature. Stretching and acutely injured muscle only injures it more or at best makes it slower to heal.
Have you tried wrapping it? I think this helps a lot.
Hope this advice is helpful!
John
