Subject: What did you eat on IM run?
I am trying to figure out my nutrition plan for IM Cozumel. I've got the bike part down, I'm pretty sure -- relying mainly on Infinit for calories, supplementing w/ peanut butter crackers/salt tabs as necessary for taste and salt purposes. I've done this a million times on the bike and it works well for me.

Running is another story. I tend to have a sensitive stomach on the run. I was planning on living off the course, using water and powergels for fluid/calories (aiming for ~200 cal per hour). Well, I tried a 17-mile run this past weekend using the PowerGels (which I've used on the bike before w/out issue), and my stomach revolted. It could have been a fluke, or it could be that what works on the bike will not work on the run. I already know my Infinit won't work on the run b/c it's got protein and when I tried running w/ it, it didn't work.

What have other people eaten/drank on the run that kept you going but didn't make you sick?

I same as on bike but less calories per hour...make up maltodextrin mix with 15 grams of carbs per 20' with a little flavoring and 1 Lava Salt per hour. On bike I go with 22 grams of carbs per 20'.

I also drink coke/pepsi. Have you tried that on your long run? I get a can open it so it gets flat and do about what would be in a cup and tried in training.

Why not get similar infinit w/o protein for run?

For my IM I only had water, pepsi on run, my mix on bike and run...and maybe 4 pretzels on the bike for whole IM. I like simple.

I also use Infinit with protein on the bike.  When I get to the IM run, my stomach is usually unhappy, so the Infinit bike mix doesn't work.  And for me, Gatorade is a no-go.

I use an Infinit mix without protein for the run -- if that isn't working, I switch to Coke, salt tabs, and an occasional gel.  I find I do best if I don't take anything for the first few miles of the run to give my stomach a chance to settle into the run.

Good luck -- it definately takes experimentation to figure out what works!

Gatoriad, water, cookies, pretzles, 1 power gel.  No tummy troubles.

GU gels.  One about every 45-50 min.  I drank about 3-4 oz of Gatorade and 3-4 oz of water at each aid station (needed to dilute the Gatorade a bit in my tummy).

(And, I must confess, since I was injured and cranky going into the race, I also indulged in the mini Oreos I discovered they had at all the Vineman run aid stations.  Yum.)

Cookies, pretzels, broth, orange slices, and a little (very little) gatorade.  I'm usually able to eat just about anything, and throttling back on the intensity (due to my injury) helped keep GI issues away.  I'm not a huge fan of Gu's, Gels, Powerbars, or sports drink (they are convenient for long runs, but I'm willing to bring a banana, Payday candy bar, granola bars, nutrigrain bars, etc. with me on the bike to get calories).

Try pretzels, cookies, and broth (maybe the flat Coke/Pepsi) and see how your stomach accepts them.

Edited to add orange slices.

I love my Triberry GU for mary or IM mary every 30 minutes chased down with water.  There are blocks for GU or other brands and as stated above, you can have a run mix for infinate if you want to go that route.  I don't like to try to swallow solids much while I am trying to breath on the run if I can help it.

Whatever I could get my hands on....

I started with bananas and coke to make sure my GI issues were done.  After the first loop (IMAZ, three loop course) I ate whatever I could find...cookies, pretzels, coke...I even tried the broth and fruit--just because.

Make sure you have sufficient water with the gels.  For marys and HIM runs, I've used Gu and make sure to get ~8oz (two of those little cups) for each Gu pouch.  My strategy is to rip open the Gu when I see the water station coming up, power down the Gu, then get two cups of water to wash it down.  Otherwise my stomach can't handle the Gu.

Not much...it was hot & i really wasn't interested in much food.  I had some carbo-pro in a nathan bottle and chucked it by mile 2 b/c i didn't want to carry it.  I had maybe 2 or 3 gels total on the entire run.  One or two swallows of g-ade or coke at each aid station.  Second half of the run i occasionally had an orange or grapes at an aid stations.  Felt fine nutritionally, just thirsty, so i ate lots of ice swallowing a bit of it and spitting a lot of it out.  Much more than a few swallows of liquid was making my stomach feel sloshy, so i just went by feel and kept it light on the run.

Gu and water.  Until I started to fall apart.  Then I remembered seeing cookies back at mile 20 (when they looked disgusting to me) and I SO wanted a cookie.  No such luck.  But the desire to have a cookie got me to the end...

Lesson:  it's hard to predict what you'll want on the day.  My strategy was to bring what works (which only you can figure out) and be prepared to adjust.

I do not race with solids ever. I was using a slurry of Infinit and I would squirt a little in each water cup at every aid station through Mile 20. I then switched to Coke. I finished up before they brought out the chicken broth but I've used that in the past with success.

I used Infinit the entire time.  I had 4 bottles to start on my fuel belt and that took me through the halfway point.  Then I picked up my other 4 bottles.

Had a bit of water, but that was it.

x2.
This was also my IM nutrition experience.  I had to adjust my nutrition both on the bike and (especially) the run despite having trained/raced with the things I tried to use on race day.

In training, I used GE and gels on all my long runs with good success.  On IM race day  I struggled on the run, and I couldn't get either GE or gels down.  I switched to bananas+oranges+water based on taste.  That sat very well and got me thru without having to walk more than the aid stations.

my plan was to just do gels and water...maybe the gatoraid endurance on the run.  I did those three but also coke at every opportunity and it wasn't flat.  also, some pretzels, crackers and oranges.  Coke was the best stuff ever!  No stomach issues.

For those who used Infinit, do you have a separate run mix, or are you using your bike mix (that presumably has protein)?

I use their marathon blend as a start, but turn off the protein.

No protein and less Kcal in my run mix.  So they are both different.

For IM #1, I used gatorade, water, chicken broth, coke (after mile 13), and a couple of gels. For IM#2, I used water, grapes, potato chips and coke (after mile 16). Stomach was much happier with IM#2.

My "plan" went out the window and I just ate off the course and what looked good to me. Bananas and gatorade is what I craved the first part of the marathon but towards the end chicken broth was KING!! I could not stomach a gel.  I also had tums in my back pocket just in case.  Best of luck!!

Oh, and potato chips Rocked on the bike!! Something about the salt and crunch. I remember thinking that was the best thing I had all day. I threw them in my special needs bag at the last minute and I'm so glad I did.

I had no nutrition plan for the run...just figured I'd go by what my body was telling me. I ended up having gatorade, water, pretzels, oranges, and chocolate chip cookies. Although, I was bummed because I started craving the cookies around mile 15 or so, but all the aid stations were out of them. Then, I got to like mile 23 or 24 and I no longer wanted one, but they had plenty. I figured I spent the past 9 miles running to find them, so I might as well take one .

No stomach issues.

My race had aid stations every mile or so and I alternated coke at one, gatorade/water at the next and I did that all the way from the very beginning of the run.  I have a sensitive stomach too and it worked great.  I had planned on having a Gu every 5 miles or so but after the 1st it just wsn't appetizing so i didn't have any more.  Around mile 20 I started to get really hungry so I had some crackers or cookies, banana and a big chunk of some kind of a custardy cake type thing.  Maybe not the smartest thing but it didn't bother my stomach so it worked out.

Anything that looked good and didn't come in a gel pack!!!  I had trained with them but after the bike I was just "ready" for something (anything) else and so I just ate and drank---water, Heed, bananas, oranges, pretzels...no stomach problems either!
