My wife just ran her first tri (a sprint) this fall and fell in love (I'm not too jealous Wink).  I'd like to surprise her for her 40th birthday with a tri bike.  I know its probably crazy to do this, but . . .

The local Craigs list has a QR Ti-phoon with Dura-Ace package for sale for $1K, says has less than 300 miles and in like new condition.  This is an expensive ti bike, isn't it?

Anyway, it was purchased at a local tri shop and fitted for the seller, a 5'9" male.  My wife is 5'10" (and a bit long legged Tongue out).  What would my odds be of this bike fitting her?  Seller thinks it is a 52 cm frame.

Thanks for the help!

Just a quick off the cuff guess... but I'd think your wife would need a 56cm frame.
My wife is ~5'-7" with really long legs and she rides a 54cm.
I think a 52cm is going to be flat-out too small.
You've got to keep your eye on that top-tube length too, that's perhaps even more important.
My wife has long legs and a short torso, which makes finding the right fit/balance just a little tricky.
A bike would be a nice surprise, but better to play it safe and make sure it's going to work for her.

I would actually think this frame might work... without a fitting it is almost impossible to tell though...

I love the idea but be honest with her and then have her fit the bike, worst thing is to spend 1000 on the bike and realize it does not fit her

She will love the idea and effort

I'd say she'd probably need a 54 in a QR, based on those stats (which match mine). Her problem will be finding a top tube that's short enough for her reach, but a bike that's tall enough to accommodate her long legs. Could she MAKE a 52 fit, probably. Would it be IDEAL...eh, hard to say, but odds would be not.

$1000 seems a little high for this bike IMHO. It would be way to high if it doesn't feel comfortable.

Thanks for you help, everyone.  The local tri shop will sell me a P1 for $1700 - he guesses a 54 cm will fit  her, but if it doesn't, he'll swap it out for one that fits.  I know this would be the safe way to go, but saving $700 for what appears to be a better bike is appealing.

Did any of you have trouble learning to ride in an aero postion?  Some  of the "expert" articles I've read on the web say a good deal of people don't end up liking a tri bike.

Thanks again

I'm not so sure the QR is a better bike than a P1...
But I agree with the previous posts - a well fit beginner tri bike will probably be faster and give your wife more joy than a poorly fitting $10,000 race machine.

My first "real" bike was a tri bike, and I loved it. My tri bike is by far and away the most comfortable of all my bikes. She'll love it. ;-) (Although I'd bet money a 54 cervelo will be too big.)

I'm 5'11" and ride a 54cm Cervelo P2. I could go down to a 52cm frame but a 56cm frame would be too big.  I'm sure my ratio of torso to leg lenght is different than your wife's but I agree with the previous poster that 54cm may be pushing it...

My first bike is a Tri bike.  Love it.  FWIW, I love QR's (I ride a Tequilo) but in this case go with the P1.  The shop will swap it out if it doesnt fit, they will most likely do a fitting for her, she gets support from a local shop, etc.  I think its worth the $700.
