Run - Marathon
Total Time = 2h 49m 36s
Overall Rank = 364/42000
Age Group = M35
Age Group Rank = 67/

Pre-race routine:

On saturday morning I went for a short light running of 7km around Brooklyn area since I was staying in Sleep Inn Hotel close to Verrazzano Bridge. Nice breakfast with 3 plain bagels and 5 egg's whites.
I drank 1liter of half water and half apple juice along the day.
No lunch and I had a snack in the afternoon after going walking as tourist in Manhattan. Snack with a powerbar and in the early evening a box of low fat Kellogs cornflakes. A yogurt before going to sleep at 7pm.
I was up at 4am and I prepared 2x sandwiches with honey and banana and I left the hotel at 5.20am. I was there in the starting area already at 6.00am and the race started at 9.40am. I had my breakfast at 6.40am and I had a box of powerbar shot 1hr before the start.

Event warmup:

Warmup was impossible because of the limited space and because I had to be in the starting grid 1 hr before already. Just some running on the place and stretching.

   Run

Comments:

I started a little bit faster because the course is easier at beginning but I could balance already the pace at the half-point. Very though in the last few miles but so many spectators to support you that you feel that you have to push until the last energy drop.

What would you do differently?:

I would warmup more even if it would though but moving more because the first mile was though and my legs cold.

Post race

Warm down:

This is the worst part (the only one) of NYC marathon. After crossing the finish line you have to walk about 2km for getting your bag and exit the area to meet with your mates.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Uphills in the second half. I would have done about 2mins less I think on a flat course.

Event comments:

The best race ever in terms of organization, course and support. It is definetely a MUST and all the marathon around the world should learn from this main event on how to organize such races.
A suggestion: stay at Sleep INN hotel in Brooklyn. Very cheap, convenient and on the raceday you reach the starting area in 20mins with a taxi for 40$. No need to go through the buses, ferry, etc. proposed by the organization and you can sleep until 5am.

Course:The course is challanging and the first half is faster for sure. Km 24 and 25 are very though together with mile 23. Long slight uphills which can kill your legs if you arrive there too tired.
