Any number of things generally it is: One more light pole, one more yard, one more step.
Sometimes I do the Prime #'s between 1-100 and repeat.
There is the ever popular HTFU.
Quite often it is the lyrics to the last song I heard before or during the race, thought I can recal the lyrics to quite a few songs on demand. (But trust me you don't want me to sing them.

This past June, in the early stages of IMCDA bike, my first IM, I was worrying about the usual things during a race. When rounding a bend in the road I heard a bag piper playing "Amazing Grace". You wouldn't believe the sense of calm that came over me for the rest of the day (or maybe you would!). So when I'm worried or my legs are heavy I now sing that song. Works every time!

I'm gonna try Amazing Grace for the long haul now - thanks for reminding me. Blinding song and the last time I heard it was at my mate's Dad's funeral - Happy thoughts though, so all good memories!

Cheers!

On the last 3/4 mile of today's 15k race it was "don't throw up, don't throw up"!  Before that it was "must catch her, done, must catch him, done..."

It's various movie quotes for me:

"Pain is your ally." - GI Jane
"Take the pain" - Platoon
"No retreat, no surrender" - 300

And sometimes I have to resort to song and trick myself:
"I feel good"  James Brown

On sprints, if I feel like I am letting up, I tell myself "If you're not hurting, you're not trying."

I haven't had a chance to read all the pages yet, but I definitely do! What I chant depends on the day, mood, etc

Some days it's a kick some on that I heard recently. But usually only one line. Even with chanting in my head, more than on eline seems to difficult when I am out of breath.

Some days it just "Suck it up. Suck it up". Yeah, I'm nice to my self...

Some days I have found myself chanting "I think I can... I think I can..." But that's usually only after reading to my daughter about the little engine.
