Hello everyone,
My name is John and I'm currently working towards my first triathlon; the Oceanside Iron Man 70.3 on March 27.

I've done a few half marathons and a full marathon so I want to accomplish this feat of completing a triathlon.

What I want to know is where can we go in this area to do open water swimming?  Are there groups out there that meet up together to do this?  If so, I'd love to hear from you.  You can email me at the address below.

Thanks,
John - johnmarnie408@yahoo.com

Wow... pretty brave of you to start with a HIM.
Even as a seasoned runner, a HIM is serious business...  I suggest also signing up on a sprint or Oly prior to you HIM as a training experience building up to your HIM, just for fun to see what's the thing like... but that might be challenging too, since the season barely starts in April - not many races before March.

About open water swims... I swim in  Aquatic Park in SF... I know it's far for you, but the water is pretty calm there.
Then there is Almaden Lake Park in San Jose. Really nice sandy beach, but I have only swam there in a race (SV tri), so not sure about their rules (if any).

Good luck with your training!

Hey John,

There are a few different places to check out. I put together a list below. Shoot me a PM if a google search does not turn enough info up for you, or if you want to meet up at Redwood shores. I am always looking for an OWS partner.

For group swims your best bet is to get connected with a local Tri Club like Silicon Valley Tri club, Tribe, Team Sheeper, or either of the two SF groups. They will have group open water swims.

Locations:
Redwood Shores in Redwood City, my favorite location, its an open water lagoon fed from the bay, its very protected.
Santa Cruz Pier: My 2nd favorite. make sure you swim past the pier by 50 yards so you don't get tangled in fishing lines.
Lake Del Valle in Livermore
Shadow Cliffs Park in Livermore
Almaden Lake in San jose: However, they are only open from may thru august I think. Only on Wednesday nights when they are open.
Aquatic park in SF as the above poster mentioned. I usually see a lot of people here.
Coyote Point
There is also a place in Fremont, but the name escapes me right now.

I live in San Mateo, and would be interested in group swimming in redwood shores... Send me a PM.
I used to practice windsurfing on the Foster City Lagoon... does anybody swim there too? Is the water safe (clean)? I'm guessing is the same water as in Redwood Shores.

And John, here is very well written article on someone doing a HIM as first tri Surprised ... certainly some good pointers that can help you out. Interesting read nonetheless...

EDIT (forgot the link.. duh!, now in place)

When I can't get anyone to go with me, I swim the big swim lane at Shadow Cliffs in Pleasanton or Quarry Lakes in Fremont. If I have swim buddies, we either do loops at Shadow Cliffs or we swim around the wharf in Santa Cruz. There is a group that goes out on Friday nights and Saturday mornings in Santa Cruz (the SC tri club) and does big group wharf swims - probably really good practice for Oceanside with the cool water and waves. I LOVE the wharf swims!

My favorite is Lake Del Valle. But I live in Fremont so I'll go to Quarry Lakes too. But you have to stay in the roped area so it's not as free as an OWS should be IMO.
