Hello :

I have just started my Olympic 2X Balanced -16 week training program and am hoping to complete my first tri in La Quinta on march 7th, 2010 on my 50th birthday. 

I have been riding my mountain bike on slicks for some three years now (i love biking first thing in the morning watching the sun come up) and have been running (ugh, but I'll be OK)  for the past five months twice a week. I have also jsut started my tri simming lessons and hope that I improve drastically over the next 16 weeks or I am in big trouble (think bull moose in the china shop).

I am wondering about the biking times suggested in the training program. If I am riding on a trainer in doors should I still ride for the suggested time period as compared to if I was riding on the road. Eg: 80 minutes on the trainer would be a harder workout than 80 minutes on the road??? Would somebody be able to give me some direction on this?

Welcome and good luck with training!  Your morning bike rides sound amazing!!

As for the trainer time - you can still challenge yourself quite alot on the trainer. I've never heard of the need to extend your time - you can challenge yourself with tougher gears, keeping higher and higher cadence. Something like a spinnervals dvd might help you too ...

Welcome to BT. 

If you can ride on the trainer for the prescribed time, that'd be great.  If not, ride what you can and don't worry too much about those lost minutes. 

The next question most people ask is how to equate miles on the trainer with miles on the road, and the short answer is you can't, but I usually assume an "average" outdoor pace for the indoor rides.

Thankyou for the advice. I have thought about the dvds, do you have any suggestions?

Early bike ride planned for tomorrow, weather here still allows for some outdoor biking, Snow unfortunetly is probably not far away.

Hey McFuzz;

Thanks for the advise. I can do the time on the trainer but I probably am not the first to say it is boring. I watched the comedy channel on tv the other day while on the trainer for an hour and half and that was alot of fun. I don't usually watch that channel so I guess the new training regime is expanding my horizons

Yeah, I'd say stick to about the same amount of time on the trainer.

As for DVDs, I like the "Spinervals" with Coach Troy. My wife and I just got the "Spinervals Endurance Builder 5-pack," so we have 10 hours of new workout footage to watch!! Last winter, we just used 1 DVD that was 90 minutes - it had 3 different 30 minute workouts. I didn't mind that because I could do a quick 30 minute workout, or I could do 2 or 3 workouts all back-to-back for a longer workout.

I HATE working out on the trainer, but Spinervals makes it a little more possible...

Anyway, that's what I like. Good luck!!
