If you count trainer miles, you would have to count spinning miles and stationery bike  miles, and those things are woefully inaccurate. Do you want someone to get credit for 20 miles if they only put out a 14-mile effort?

But whatever y'all decide

I'm up for a bike challenge.  I like the team/charity idea.  West coast vs. East coast would be fun for a change.  We could use the time zones to identify the Westies from the Easties.  Hawaii, Alaska,Pacific and Mountain time vs. Central,Eastern and Atlantic (New Foundland* for Canada) time.  Those who reside outside of  North America could have the option to choose a team?    Thoughts?

Not really Bear. I guess the best way to handle that is to just not include some of those miles in my goal as I know ahead of time one or two if my rides per week will be on a trainer.

I also think the minimum and maximum caps on milage are a good idea. I had 451 miles last month and do not want to increase that number by 20% for June. I think we are all in different cycles of our training and it is smart to set the minimums and maximums to accomidate those differences.

Malgal - 2005-06-03 8:50 AM Those of us who were not in on it last month can obviously not go 20% above our previous goal. Mal

Not your previous goal, but your previous month's actual mileage.

How would you  guys feel about the male vs female team thing but maintaining the charity aspect? maybe each team can choose a beneficiary charity to which the losing team would contribute ? Y'all can also show your booty or whatever other foolishness you decide on.

Problem with last month's mileage + 20% as the goal: I had no A races last month and I have one this month. This month includes 2 taper weeks and a transition week. My mileage has to go down this month. How about a choice of last month + 20% OR our planned distances for the month. I like using the challenges as a public commitment to my training plan.

I'm open to any team/individual thing as long as it's for charity and I don't have to make another picture of my @$$ available to the tri-community for appetite control.

And no, that avatar is not me. I'll have one up this weekend. The Chycks are gonna learn the meaning of "be careful what you wish for".

I'm in on this one because my tri is on Sunday so I can focus on biking to train for RAGBRAI.  No opinion on team divisions, like the charity plan again, vote no for trainer and spinner miles (sorry).

Are we going retro back to the 1st?

Rollin' Thunder - 2005-06-03 11:10 AM What if the Bear or someone else takes all of the people that enroll, their goals and divides them into teams? He could do that without knowledge of our ability/willingness to reach our goals and make it fair because of the randomness. Mike

cool idea!

I'd be in for a bike challenge again. Even though I missed my goal on the last one, I'm increasing it to 150 miles for the month. I also like the team thing - north vs. south, east vs. west, red states vs. blue states - doesnt' matter to me.

How about team captains, and each one drafts their team members?

GREAT! Straight back to Junior High where I was picked last for EVERYTHING because I weighed 90 pounds soaking wet in a world of large Iowa farm girls.  Well, whoever is doing the 'drafting' , just be advised - I WILL make my goal - period.

Don't you mean slow vs. fast?

I love the idea of team captains and actually, it would be to the advantage of each to choose those individuals with lower goals because as they go over their goal for the month, it will statistically have a higher inpact on the overall percentage.

I nominate the Bear and Kim as captains because they started the challenge theme.

I'm up for this!! My goals will be modest, I'm still new to this and to top it off I move at the end of the month, so I have lots of hours of packing to do! But all the more reason to escape for bike rides, ride?

Last month - my first ever on the bike - I did 150 miles roughly. I had already made 200 a goal for June, so that would be my goal here as well.

First of all, lets keep in mind that the purpose of this is to keep one another motivated to reach a goal, so I think the teams need to be small enough such that each member can monitor/motivate the others.  Why don't we simply create a list of participants who blog their training on actual bicycles (no spinners, gym bikes, etc).   Then, we take the list and randomly divide it into teams of 6 people (trying to equalize the ratio of girls to guys on each team).

We can debate this, but I think its fair to include miles on a trainer as long as its the same bike you would otherwise ride outside.  The mileage measurement has to be through a cyclometer mounted to the bike that measures the distance through the wheel on a roller.  No other device or trainer will count (e.g. computrainers, stationary bikes, spinning bikes, etc).  This should only be allowed in the case of inclement weather or darkness.  There's no replacing outside miles on a bike.

Then, its a 1 month race to see who can log the most miles.  To reduce the effect of having one super human on a particular team, we can base it upon the team average of miles/participant.

This would allow us to get to know others on the board and keep the teams small enough that we could "motivate" one another through the inspire me's.  Also, participants would agree to pitch in $5 per to contribute to the Top 3 team charities.  Team 1 gets 50% of the pot, Team 2 gets 30%, and Team 3 gets the remaining 20%.

The Charities have to be legitimate and able to accept credit card donations directly to the charity in the name of the person who is raising funds.  We'll use the honor system where it concerns the actual payment of the pot.

I would definitely be down for another bike challenge. My back might continue to limit my swimming and my achilles might limit my running, but biking seems wide open.... However, I'm not doing another challenge where the prize is showing some skin. I really thought the charity was a GREAT idea (esp since my charity was the beneficiary ), but it might be fun to still make it boys vs girls or whatever. If skin wins, I'll just have a personal goal....

Rollin' Thunder - 2005-06-03 12:21 PM cyclometer or Garmin...right?

Yep, Garmin or Cyclometer.  I was simply referring to inside trainer miles.  I have a fluid trainer where I set my actual tri bike on a roller and can still read the mileage through the cyclometer.  This is as accurate as though I were riding outside.  I don't think any of the gym bikes are very accurate, nor are the spin bikes.  The point being, this should be about training on your racing bicycle and if the weather doesn't permit an outside ride, then if everyone agrees, we can include the miles you "ride" inside on a magnetic or fluid trainer.  See pic below.  On this setup, the cyclometer will still give you an accurate reading of speed and distance.

The miles need to be on your bike.

Oh, I love my avatar.... now. It's staying till I find something better! I'm just not willing to go any further and my bf was such a whiner about taking that pic that I think it would be disrespectful to him to post anything more revealing. He's not a jealous, possessive or demanding guy, so I respect his limits.

Yeah, I ride my magnetic trainer inside when it gets dark outside and I still want to ride for an hour or more. I don't like it, but I need the milage and sometimes work and my boy need the attention during daylight hours. I already either run or swim at lunch, so I can't take off earlier from work or anything.

I love Cycle Ops, or Cyclops as I call my trainer. It is boring and I don't really get the same workout, but sometimes, a guy has to play the hand he is dealt.

I could just take those numbers off of my goal. We could go either way on this one.

Counting trainer miles puts those of us without trainers on unequal footing since there is no way for us to get in miles when it's raining or dark. I think Mike's right, just subtract your expected trainer mileage from your goal....
