My wife is likes to say, "the most expensive food is the food you throw away."

We usually plan weekly menus to include a leftovers on Thursday or Friday -- finishing up what we had Sunday, Monday & Tuesday-- and that's after I took leftovers for lunch at least one day. Last night the kids got to choose from Chicken Curry, Tuna Casserole, and Cajun Catfish Wraps.

Leftover chicken, pork, sloppy joe, etc. easily becomes burritos/wraps with some onion, beans and spices.

We try to get the most mileage possible out of the food we buy.

With 5 children leftovers are a rarity.  But when we have them, they don't hang around long enough to go bad.

KeriKadi, turkey gumbo is traditional after Thanksgiving fair in our household.  Give it a try.

We have 5 too but those little girls don't eat too much.
I can eat turkey on thanksgiving with mashed and gravy but not any other time.  My husband fried one a few years in a row - yummy but.
My husband would likely go for the turkey gumbo but nobody else.

I usually eat leftovers for lunch.  Sometimes I forget about them and those get thrown away after about a week.

I'm single, so leftovers are somewhat of a necessity in order to save costs - if I cook an actual "dish", then I will have it for a few days. I currently have a container of pasta and meat sauce in my fridge, that I made last night and had for dinner, ate for lunch today, and will eat again tomorrow. It will still be fine, and if 2 days later is too much, then I have the world's highest tolerance for tainted food b/c the only times I've ever gotten food poisoning were from freshly prepared items I ate elsewhere.

I could have written that word for word.  Well, except that I'm on vacation and we didn't have any leftover pasta with meat sauce (although we did have pasta with arrabiata sauce for dinner last night).

Jackemy - 2009-12-03 8:34 AM I observe a one foot rule.

Anything deeper than one foot in the fridge is off limits.

I'm glad you explained that one.  I would have wondered what the "one foot rule" is - smells worse than one foot?  Would only handle the food with a foot?  Throw out if the green fuzz is more than 1 foot high or around?

The only leftover I won't eat is fish.  If we have any left it goes in the trash.  Restaurant leftovers usually have to be eaten by the next day or it's not any good.  I don't mind left-overs, but wife won't touch them.   I like the 1 foot rule, it seems we throw a lot of things away over 1 foot back in our fridge.

Where is the "I love leftovers" option? I don't like to throw food away, but I also love leftovers!

I eat leftovers all the time.  Whenever I cook I try to make extra so my husband and I (or at least one of us) can have leftovers for lunch the next day.  Most of my leftovers end up getting eaten, but occasionally I throw something away.  I don't worry about it too much.

I give my leftovers 2-4 days before they hit the trash can, depending on what's in it.  Seafood gets 2 days max, something without meat might get 4.  This seems to be fine for me, I've gotten food poisoning twice in my life and neither time was from leftovers.

Totally agree.  I won't eat leftover seafood though.

Your last sentence is pure blasphemy around our neck of the woods.   I have eaten just about everything that walks or flies (thats legal) in a gumbo.

This year I bought and cooked a third turkey after Thanksgiving as there was not enough meat left over for gumbo from the two we cooked for Thanksgiving Day.

Ain't afraid of no bacteria...I'll eat whatever leftover like I owned it. As long as it's not fuzzy, I'm in.

Then again, I've never been sick, ever, from food. I regularly eat sushi and ceviche, leftovers, stuff that's been out (not forever, just out), and whatever's available.  Every leftover is fair game.  I have a solid, solid stomach, for which I am eternally grateful.

If it wasn't for leftovers, I would never have anything to eat for lunch It's only husband-creature and myself, so I pretty much always cook a recipe that makes 4-6 servings; that way, we have dinner + next day's lunch. Sometimes I make way more food than I intended, and then we either eat it over the course of a few days, or put it in the freezer, where it inevitably freezer-burns and THEN gets thrown away.I have a real issue about wasting food -- the idea that wasting food is immoral and bad was drilled into me from an early age. I have actually shed tears, as an adult, due to having not used fresh produce and having allowed it to spoil.

I live alone & love my own cooking... but like HECK I'm cooking "for one!"  No, I typically make a big ole pot o' whatever-it-is, put a coupla servings in containers to share or freeze for later, and graze off the rest for 2-3 days.  I only actually "cook" about 2X week, unless life gets crazy busy, which is when that freezer comes in handy!

OTOH, if I don't finish something and it hangs around too long, there's no great pain in my heart in throwing it in the trash-- but that doesn't happen too often.
