I just looked in today's paper and the current water temp is 43 degrees (F).  I've got two and a half months for it to reach a respectable temperature for the first sprint race (it didn't happen last year).

So, has anyone looked at the water temp where they plan to swim?  Time to start praying to the weather gods for me

I don't want to know the water temperature, because the ice isn't completely off Lake Ontario yet!!! It has 4 months to warm up...

Triathletes north of the Mason-Dixon line should get a time bonus just because of what we have to put up with due to cold weather.

Water temp. for Melbourne, FL is 71.8. I broke down and bought my daughter a longjohn style wetsuit for her race there on the 18th. Not too much hope of the temp being over 78 by then.

How do you find out avg water temp for a specific lake. Is there a good web resource that has this info. I have a race in June, and I'd like to get an idea of what the water temp will be.

Texas has a fish and wildlife department where they post lake and ocean water conditions. You state should have something similar. Their web-site should have the water conditions somewhere. You might also check your paper under fishing or outdoor recreation: fishing reports have the water temps...

Hermon,
Is that the temp in the lagoon? If so then I'm going to stop sweating it, I was thinking that it was going to be <70 for the Pineappleman tri. I know the ocean was too cold for me and the kids last weekend, crazy spring breakers!

Phew, I'm a bit relieved...

The first race I planned on doing this year is June 6th and last year the water temp was 64 degrees.  I do not plan on buying a wetsuit so I am hoping it is warmer this year or I will postpone my first race until July.  The good news is that last year I don't think the air temp hit 80 until July and that is rare.  Hoping for a very warm spring.

No, that is the water temp at Cape Canaveral, www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.phtml?station=41009. That is the closest I could find to Melbourne Beach. I hope the water in the lagoon is warmer.

You should be okay in two and a half months. I've been swimming in the ocean in Cape Cod in May wearing nothing but a smile and found it to be just great, eh!

you're nuts!  LOL in May??  My son't b'day is in May and we never make it into the water until at least June.  I planned his birth thinking I'd bve with him on the beach in May and it has never happened.

Last June for the 1st sprint, water temp was 57 and they cancelled the swim.

57? My pool never gets that warm. Maybe that's why everybody was looking at me funny when I came out of the water smiling. They probably thought I was Canadian!

There was still Ice on my lake just over a week ago. I haven't thought about even taking the wet suit out yet. I am stuck doing laps for a few more weeks.

Regarding finding out lake temperature. See if the lake is within a park or district that has an environmental department. I will be doing my first tri in Danbury CT this June, and called the department that controls the lake. They emailed me the average lake temperature for the last 3 years. Unfortunatley it ranged from 66 to 71, so I'm not sure if I should purchase a wet suit. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on what temperatures they would consider not using a wetsuit. I don't want to break the bank, so if its not necessary for this race, I'd rather skip it until another time.

wetsuits are not allowed if the water temp is over 78.  Other than that, I would use it always.

well, i imagine it's an individual preference as to what is too cold. you northerners up there make me feel kind of wimpy. i wasn't planning on buying a wetsuit because i didn't think i needed it. then browsing around the web, brightroom to be exact, i look at pictures from last years race which i didn't do. they were all wearing wetsuits! and it was april 12 i think. this years race is on the 4th, this sunday. so i asked at the local bike/tri shop and they said yep, it's pretty cold. well, i can't afford a 200 hundred dollar wetsuit, so i thought i'd wing it. our paper here and the bike shop's website post the water temp. it was 66f last week. i tried it sans wet suit and froze. today the temp has gone up to 70f, beautiful day though chilly 60 -62f, but the water was gorgeous. i bought a cheap surfing wetsuit and went in. ouuch! that was still cold and it took me several strokes to get moving a little, my face was frozen. not too bad after a while though, so i think i can handle it, i hope... 7:00 am daylight savings.. i don't know.

so in answer to the previous question, for me 66 t0 71 degrees definitely requires a wet suit. happy training and racing everybody, russell.
