The mental side is definately a hard one to whip.  Injuries, aches, age, competitive doubts, etc all mess with my head.  The bike thing has really got me frustrated too.  I mentioned last week that I rode with some more elite athletes and felt I was keeping up until the end of a 40 mile ride.

Last night those same athletes were joined by two more bike racers.  25 miles into the ride they were jumping the group and pulling out at 32 mph.  The top riders (3) stayed in front and broke the group apart, one guy totally bailed on the ride and I found myself being left behind like fat kid riding a Huffy.  How demoralizing!  One experience biker (not one of the elite guys) tried to encourage us and tell us that those guys should pull away every time.  I still was a little down and had the demons of "you can never keep up" were at work.

So, I think we all fight the head game in one way or another. Hang in there (I'm keep trying to tell myself that anyway!)

Just did my first competitive event of the year (only a 5k).  I did the 3.2 miles in 21:30 averaging around 6:58 per mile.  It was a very hilly park course and was pleased overall with my first race of 2010.  I finished 26th overall but 5th in my age group (40-44).  The top two were in the mid 5 minute per mile range...Ouch!

Nice! I hope to run in the low 7's by late fall this year!!

I have no idea how these people keep such a high pace for these races. The last (and first) 5K I did one guy did a 15:26 at a 4:57/mi pace!!!!!

Now thats crazy until you look at the 2:03:59 marathon record. Jeeze...

Knocked out a training 1/2 IM today in 5hrs 32 minutes.  We had some leisurely transitions and was feeling pretty crappy on the run because we were unsupported and I ran out of water.  Aside from the dehydration I felt pretty good though.

I check it too, but I have been pretty injured still, and don't feel I have too much to give!  I've been a bit down, because I want to be doing more than I am.

I had a good longer bike last week, and just got back from LA yesterday.  I'm back up to running 4 miles without too much pain.

Finished first sprint Tri of the season.  Weather was horrible...30 mph gust, rain, sleet, cold.
Swim was rough as it was in a pool with several hundred of your closest friends kicking you in the face.  Bike averaged almost 21 mph in the wind and sleet, run averaged 6:45 miles for the 5k.

Overall, ok with first outing.

Sounds tough! Great job on the bike and run!  Better than I could have done in perfect conditions!

Congrats sounds like a tough race. Where are you based to still be getting that type of weather?

Group...I completely apologize for my silence.  Life has thrown curveballs at me at work and IM training did not go as planned.  IM st. George was last weekend and it was a blast.  I set a new PR coming in just under 14 hours.  Joe (garryowens) completed his first IM in 12hrs and 18 minutes.  Send him congrats on kicking my and having such a stellar performance on such a hard course.

My race report is here (http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=206550&posts=1#M2836665) and Joe's is here (http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=206429).  Check them out.

I also have put more photos in my blog if you are interested.

Every please send Abbie an inspire or two.  She is training for 3 IMs this year (incredible).  She unfortunately also recently lost her job but is such an inspirational and positive person I am certain a new opportunity will come along.  She also recently attended a course required for her Triathlon Coach's license.  She may be our coach soon---she can let us all in on this.

Summer is almost here.  What are your summer goals?  Mine is Total Fitness.  I want to be able to do anything (climb anything and everything, run, bike, swim, somersault, flip, roll, nookie, play, etc.) anytime.  In order to do this, I must be at my ideal weight and fitness level.  Therefore...TOTAL FITNESS.  With no structure training in my future, this is my goal.  Be active and push myself mentally and physically every day.  Eat right every day.  If I do these things, Total Fitness will come to me.

More forward...the past is already behind you and there is no sense in looking back.

I am in central Illinois.  The weather is very erratic this time of year.  We just had a frost advisory on Monday morning.

Thanks for all of your encouragement from my first tri of the year.  The next week I played football with our youth group and like a dummy tried to be 18 again and pulled my hamstring and hip flexor so I was down for a week and a half.  Yesterday did a light 3 mile run and modest swim this morning.  Feeling better but it still hurts a lot to sit as that hammy is tender where it attaches to my bumm.

Careful!  Hamstrings can put you down for a long time if you don't treat them right, but it sounds like you're being conservative.

Well, I've had some ups and downs with my training.  All linked to the condition of my back.  I'm working on it, though, and I'm thinking about signing up for Tri Indy on September 1st.  I want to do the Oly distance, but depending on my condition, I may just do the sprint.
