Be careful out there, folks.  I know I jog in the bike lane a lot.

Me too. I wish they didn't make the sidewalks of concrete. Didn't know it was illegal to run in the bike lane. The couple that got hit were running at night, in a dark part of town, with no reflective gear, and probably next to one another. Just sayin'...

Damn, I hope they're ok.

I always run in the bike lane. If I run at night I wear my blinking red light on the front of my shorts. I usually don't run in the bike lane on busy streets. The sidewalks are horrible as they usually uneven and the asphalt is softer.

I too hope this guy is okay.

I run in the bike lane, even though there is a sidewalk. IHowever, I try to always run against the flow of traffic so I can see any oncoming cars. For me, I don't mind the impact of running on the concrete, I just hate the constant curbs and driveway entrances.

eek! I hope the guy recovers quickly!!

I don't run at night, but I do run in the bike lane against traffic quite often(didn't know I was breaking the law).  Geez!

The driver wasn't charged at all. Something does seem right about that. As a driver I don't think you can use "I didn't see him" as an excuse.

Here is a great blog. This guy often posts about drivers killing cyclists and not being charged, unless of course if you hit a cop. http://www.tucsonbikelawyer.com/keep-this-incident-report/"

Who's at fault here? Woman struck while walking. It's a hit and run so the driver clearly feels at fault. Shouldn't have been driving in the bike lane. But why on earth was the woman WALKING in the bike lane... with traffic... at 11:30 p.m... where there is a sidewalk?? I hope she makes it and I hope they catch the loser who hit her. But I will stay out of the bike lane now no matter what time of day. My knees taking some beating on concrete sidewalks seems more bearable than getting killed. Frown

28-796. Pedestrian on roadways

A. If sidewalks are provided, a pedestrian shall not walk along and on an adjacent roadway.

B. If sidewalks are not provided, a pedestrian walking along and on a highway shall walk when practicable only on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic that may approach from the opposite direction.

C. A person shall not stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride from the driver of a vehicle.

When there is no sidewalk and a bike lane is available (like most of the roads where I live) you can jog all you like in it- However, common sence and the Law both state facing traffic is a must.  I was biking with a large group of BT types once where a nim-rod gal was running in the bike lane the same direction as traffic and wearing an ipod.  She (with the help of Chris) tried to kill the whole gaggle of us!

My only issue with runners continue to be the idiots that cover both ears so they can not hear the "on your left" or "Look-out Creep!" warnings that bikers and drivers may try to give them when they run the same direction of traffic.

Drivers in general can not be faulted for hitting runners (after all, do you know how hard it is to drive with your knees while talking on your cell phone with one hand and shoving a Big Mac down your throat with the other one?) if a runner is dressed in Black clothing, wears no lights or reflective gear, wears an ipod and covers both ears, and runs the same way as the cars!

I'm with Jerry on this, common sense trumps all. I've always ran in the bike lane and I'll continue to do so. With that said, I always take steps to minimize my risk of injury. I wear light or bright colored clothing and if I'm running with an ipod I have the volume low enough that I can hear what is happening around me. I always run against traffic and if I'm running at night I wear my blinking red cycling light. The roads I run on are low traffic roads around my neighborhood. If I run on a street with a lot of traffic I'm on the sidewalk. If I'm paying attention then I'm pretty sure I can get out of the way of a car driving in the bike lane.

So let me ask this:

I live off a road that has a bike lane (the road is a medianed 2 lane each way road), it in some sections only has a sidewalk on one side of the road.  Since a sidewalk is provided, does that mean I must cross the road to use it?  Or am I permitted to run in the bike lane (facing traffic) on the side w/o a sidewalk?  And what if the sidewalk starts again?  There are random sections of sidewalk in front of businesses, but not some homes.  So do I have to zig zag from the street to sidewalk?

I normally stick to the sidewalk, but I'm curious of how one could enforce this in the above situation.  (Yes, I know the answer is that it is not enforced).

I didn't see this guy at work. ??? He must have come in on the day I called in sick (my co-workers usually announce to me whenever we have a runner or cyclist).

I was almost hit the other night IN A CROSSWALK! Grrrr!!! I was wearing all white clothing and even had my blinking red light on my chest. The douchebag stopped at a stop sign, I continued running, and then he/she started to accelerate when I was right in front of the car! It really bothers me that people making right turns only look to the left when they stop. It was a close one, but he/she finally saw me when almost running me down. I'm sure I had "F you" all over my face when they finally looked at me.

I finally got my bike out this morning for the first time in ages.  Just over a 4 mile ride and I almost got hit.  Lady pulls up to a stop sign, looks left RIGHT AT ME IN MY DAYGLO YELLOW JACKET, looks right and starts to pull out in front of me.  I yelled at her and fortunately her window was open and she stopped so I was able to swerve, but it would have been her story that "I didn't see him".

Be careful out there folks.
