Subject: Spin Bike vs Trainer?
I purchased a spin-bike 5 years ago and have been using it for an endurance complement to running.  I transitioned into Tri's and have been using it for off-season indoor biking.  I completed a HIM last year and am scheduled for IMLP this July.  I just got my road bike fitted with aerobars and am trying to adjust the spin-bike to mirror the changes.  I'm 5'7 so bike fits are not very drastic.

I fear that the amount of seat time needed for IM training will not be satisfied by my spin bike.  Should I plop down the $250 on an indoor spinner so I can traing 100% of the time on my bike?

Does anyone know anyone who trains for IM's or HIM's with a gym style indoor spin bike?  Or does everyone at these distances have trainers?

If your position is similar, the spin bike will work just fine if you don't want to get a trainer (though you can spend less than $200 if you want).  As long as you are doing plenty of longer rides outside on your tri bike, the spin bike shouldn't hold you back.

Here is a trainer for $79
Not the fanciest, but if you are on a budget it just might work.

I agree that you will be fine on the spin bike.  I have a trainer but I prefer to go to the gym and use a spin bike.  last year I did an IM and I did all my indoor bike training on a spin bike...didn't use my trainer once.

Thanks!  I have read cycling forums that say they are different animals.  I will have a new born baby and we have a 2 yr old so I will spend many hours riding indoors.  I will get out on the road but will train a large percentage indoors.

If the advice is to stick with my spin bike, it makes life easier for me!

Thanks,
Kevin
