Has anyone here done this race? I searched for race reports and can't find any. I'm considering traveling for this one, but would like to hear more about the course first. Thanks!

My wife did it last year, and she liked everything but the run, which was mostly on packed dirt, but overall she had a great time

My biggest concern is bike hills. Was it a hilly course? I love rollers, but am not a fan of crazy climbs.

I'm doing IronGirl as my first triathlon. I think I've heard that this race is great for beginners. They changed the run course and bike course this time around.  I checked the elevation profile of the surrounding areas, and it's pretty much between 0 to 3% grade (very few).  Call them and see if you can get a map of the bike course.  Las Vegas in general is a little hilly due to the topological grounds from being in the mountains, but it's not as bad as the Seven Hills, Three sisters and Red Rock Loop! If you know how to "spin" while being on the hills without pushing yourself, you'll do just fine.

Thanks for the info. Those hills sound doable. I'll make sure to train hills in the month or two before to feel better.

Also, should I spend the extra cash to stay at the Loew's resort, or stay at a cheaper place on the strip? The strip would be fun, but it would be very convenient to stay right at the race course. Any thoughts?

I can look, but you can find cheaper places in Henderson, the town that it's actually in. Although it's "seem" to be close to the strip, but in reality it is kinda far. I live like 5 min from the strip, but getting to that area where IronGirl will be will take me about 40 minutes.

It's really up to you. I remember I stayed at Motel 6 on Flamingo about a block or so from the Strip, two years ago, for $46 a night. That's not a bad price.

If you never been in Las Vegas....prepare to stay for a week or so if you want to explore the city. People think 3 or 4 days is good enough...NO! :-P

I was a volunteer last year as all my training partners participated in Iron Girl Las Vegas.  The Lowes Hotel runs about $200 or so a day, so pretty expensive (from my wallets point fo view).  As Cyber said, Henderson is pretty close, but the strip is quite a drive.

The swim at Lake Las Vegas will be cold so have your wet suit ready. As stated, the run in mostly packed dirt, but not too bad, and the bike ride goes up hill around the lake then out onto Lake Mead Blvd down the hill and then back around, not too bad at all.

All in all "I" had a great time, but how could any red blooded American Male not love doing body marking on 1200 athletic women.

I'll be sure to ask for  you if you volunteer again...*winks* Although, if you give me any crap, my fiance will hunt you down. :-)

FYI, the new course is posted on their link. See you all in the water. Well, I'll be around managing the swim course for this race also. Keep on spreading my wings to a lot of races.
