Subject: Best beginner trainting plans?

I'm training for my first ironman in July.  I have "Going Long", but it doesn't really have a clearly outlined training plan.

There is the free ironman training plan on this site:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=441&printer=1

I also found this one:

What do people think of these plans?  Are they a good starting point from which to create my own custom plan?

Or would it be worth buying a copy of "Be Iron-fit" and looking through those plans too?  Are there any other books, or sites that I need to be looking at?

Cheers.

I used the BT beginner plan and was happy with my IM (went about 13hrs at Cozumel). I added some long rides (probably 4, 80 mile + rides early on). I questioned the long taper (4 weeks), but stuck to it and felt very fresh and ready to go on race day. Good luck.

I bought Gale Bernhardt's Training for Multisport Athletes. She's got a 13 wk. to a 13 hr. IM plan, a 13 wk. to sub 13 hr. IM and a 26 wk. IM plan in there. I used mostly the first one and added some speedwork from the sub 13 and finished IMFL in 13:11.  Longest ride was 6 hrs. and I was worried about that being enough but it was.

Thanks for the info guys.

I think I'll pick up Gale's book, if for no other reason than because the BT training plan (as a set of 20 different pdfs) is so impossible to read.

Cheers.

I printed out the pdf files for the BT HIM 20 week plan and put them in a 3 ring binder..  each week printed on one page... easy to read and easy to use with lots of room on the page to add notes, etc.

I used the Be Iron Fit intermediate plan for my 1st IM which was last July and I felt plenty ready for Lake Placid. I typed up the intermediate plan in Excel if you'd like a copy. The book is definitely worth reading especially if you are on a tight schedule.

Matt Fitzgerals's Essential Week-by-Week Training Guide has 10 levels of Ironman training plans. They are all 24 weeks in length. The first three levels are considered "beginner" plans.

I like the Be Iron Fit programs.  There are 3 levels; I'm using the competetive but may back some of the workouts down to intermediate, depending on what life has in store.  I start on February 1 for IM Louisville.

I am using the Beginner BT plan for now - i may sub in some more advanced stuff later after evaluating progress.

The pdf's are in the BT plan section - here is an excel sheet with the schedule (it is filled out w dates for my first race in June).

Also in the excel sheet is a bunch of other useful (to me) info on LTHR zones, macmillian and jack daniels running info, and vDOT.

train safe.

X2 on MF's Essential Week-by-Week Training Guide.  Has a variety of different plan levels (1-10) on all Different Race Distances.  Have used this book extensively except for the IM Distance.   What is nice is that you can mixed it up on the level.  I might use the level 4 run with the level 2 swim and level 2 bike for HIM Plan.

I like this plan for time-limited first-timers.  I used it for IMFL in 2010, but added additional bike volume.  I was very happy with the results.

The only thing to keep in mind about it, is that it assumes you've already got a decent level of HIM fitness.  It's really more of a "bridge plan" than a stand alone plan.  Be sure to read the assumptions before committing to this plan.

It seems to work well if you schedule a HIM 14-16 weeks before your planned IM, and use a HIM plan for the HIM, recover for 1-3 weeks, then use this one to take you the rest of the way to the IM.

Here is a single pdf with all the pdf's combined.

Edit: Sorry there is a 100K limit for uploads.  The doc is 124k.  If you want it PM me and I can email it.
