Ofergodssakes what happened to my little thread??

First time I have EVER heard of somebody requesting an "elective" IV.
Going to withhold further comment on that one.......{insert eye roll here}

This does remind me of a funny story though. Years ago when I worked in a pediatric ER, on Friday and Saturday nights the drunken kids would be brought in  unconscious from excessive alcohol intake. We would start IV's to rehydrate them and then they  would  be monitored until morning.

There was one wonderful curmudgeonly old Doctor I worked with who insisted we take the IV's out a few hours early. He wanted them rehydrated back to safe levels obviously, but by taking the IVs out a bit early the kids would STILL experience a wicked hangover the next day!

hydration is required after an ironman.

Dude, I CRUSH Ironman racing...I have never been in the medical tent nor have I requested an IV.

and i never insinuated you had to

i only said hydration is needed after an ironman.  you can't seriously disagree with that can you?

remember, i never said hydration is needed after an ironman via IV, just that hydration is needed

I can see i'm going to like posting here.  its much better than just the reading i've done the last few years.

i'm less than 50 posts in and already being judged and criticized for doing something people disagree with with no substantial reason whatsoever other than, you don't need to do that

i do find it hilarious that you actually typed the sentence "I CRUSH Ironman racing"

Aaaah the med tent. I would say I have fond memories, but quite frankly there are a couple I don't really remember much at all.

to the side discussion, I have some friends who are special forces and seals and I have seen them bring an IV to a wedding, party, etc for the next morning. They plug themselves in and whamo! hangover gone in a snap. Maybe the true cure for the hangover is a government secret and is stored in area 51.

Please go post on 'the other' site, and put up a synopsis of how and why you like IV's. . and put a link up for us   I'm sure the responses will be less than kind.

Bryan - I think all this training you are doing is overrated and you would be faster if you just took in IV's after races to rehydrate quicker

didn't you read, he doesn't need hydration after crushing ironman races

he gets his fluids through osmosis i guess

no real need to.  it isn't a big deal to me, but for some reason it fascinates this board

it isn't really surprising to me though.  its a common reaction.  when someone does something we don't do, alot of people have 2 natural reactions...criticize it or emulate it

It's also a common reaction when people do stupid things.

Several people have offered good reasons for not doing it.  You've just chosen to ignore it.

just because a reason agrees with your opinion doesn't mean its a good reason

nobody had a problem (or voiced a problem) with getting an IV for a mad hangover, so obviously the act of getting the IV when not needed isn't an issue

i've repeatedly said I do not take a seat if the tent is full (which has never happened).  i always speak to a nurse and explain the situation before hand and offer to have someone else to insert the IV as to not waste their time. ive asked what the difference is between taking a bag of saline when  you don't need it, and taking an extra powerbar or gels when you don't need it

sorry, you are right..i failed to see the "good" reasons

Helen (aka OP),

It is great that you have decided to help out in the medical tent.  Not only will they get some great care from you, but also a little eye candy to make their recovery faster.

Well, it's obvious there's no use discussing things with you since you have no intention of listening to what other people say.

What in the world would I know about the appropriateness of IV fluids?  I mean, you're MARRIED somebody in the medical field.

and again, I have never stated or insinuated I think IV's are better hydration than oral hydration

i just said I'm going what has always worked for me.

same with my endourolytes.  although I have read numerous studies that show dehydration and lack f sodium have nothing to do with cramps, i still take them

The difference, is that as a previous poster said, an IV is invasive, breaks the barrier protection that your skin is, which gives opportunity for bacteria to enter your body.  You are LUCKY nothing bad has happened yet.

thrombophlebitis, blood clots, bacteremia, septicemia are just SOME of the possible complications.

Might not be a good thing, they won't be needing anything that causes them to sweat more.

if someone has provided information, or you have information of why an IV is bad for me post race (other than needle issues), I would be happy to hear it

normal hydration concerns are always present when considering intravenously or orally

i'm a diabetic

i got used to the risk of needles long ago

maybe I am a little numb to that risk, but I think proper prep can go a long way in assuring safety

but i do agree, it is a risk

my arm, champ!
But I do like you, your new and you are taking some well deserved crap well.

CRUSHING at a 9:20.....??????????

I would only consider it CRUSHING if it was 9:19 or below.

i wasn't saying you didn't crush your ironman, it was just funny to read.  kinda reminded me that quote from anchorman..."i don't know if you know this, but I'm kinda a big deal"

i'm not in the 9 hour time zone so

your new and you are taking some well deserved crap well

i've got thick skin

i don't mind the criticisms at all, they're kinda expected on a public forum where a difference of opinion is not only allowed, but encouraged

i just refuse to let the "risk" of needles prevent me from using a method of hydration that has worked for me for almost 20 years.  then again, i've been eating food that ive dropped off the ground, putting money in my mouth and running with scissors since i was a kid

I guess I should have read the whole thread before I posted. I'm gonna have to agree. Not sure why this is blowing up. Maybe I hang around with too many military and medical people. Salt water in a bag just doesn't seem to register on my radar. Most of the athletes in the tour de france suck up an IV.
Now, if you want to really get under my skin, lets talk about buckets in transition!!!!!!! haha
