Subject: Cell Plans - Pitting One Against Another ?
My wife and I have been with AT&T/Cingular since 2004.  The first line is $60 and has 800 minutes.  The second line splits those minutes, and costs an extra $10 more - $70 total.  We added unlimited texting for $30 because we always went WAY over our texting limit.  (We probably send 250+ texts per month... each!)  So we're up to $100 a month.  With taxes and such, we're up to about $112.  At that high of a rate, we still don't have Internet.

I've looked at Sprint and seen that they have an Everything Data plan for $130 that includes 1500 minutes for the two lines, unlimited texting and unlimited Internet.  While this is a great plan and a great rate, we'd really rather stay with AT&T.

So has anyone ever had luck calling their current provider to say, "I can get this deal through this other provider" and had luck getting a matching deal?

PS - The big thing keeping us from switching is that we'd have to pay for new phones ($80 for a Palm Pre, and probably $80 for a new Blackberry), plus $36 per line for activations.  That's $160 for the phones and $72 for the activations.  So there's $232 that I'd rather not spend.

I would consider it since our phones suck and I've been thinking of other options, too.

Yes, that totally works.  I haven't done it with cell service but works with cable!  You call, say "I really like AT&T blah blah blah but my wife and I are looking to get all this service and found that So and So offers it for 130.  I can't find the plan on your website to match that - is there anything available?"

BUT you must be ready to walk.  If they dig in and say nope, you have to back up your threat to leave.

PS with Verizon I have unlimited text, internet, mobile email, and about 600 minutes (who uses that many anymore) for about $62 after taxes.  Yeah buddy.

One problem: Sprint coverage sux here in CT. So doeas T-Mobile. Verizon at least has decent customer service and the coverage is solid.

My Verizon is unlimited everything and $149 including calls from US to overseas (need it for work).

It can definitely work like that.  Personally, I like to negotiate in store because you can literally walk out.  However, I have always heard that in-store provides slightly less customer service perks than what you can get by calling the 1-800 number.  That was the case with Sprint a few years.  The guy in store told me to call and negotiate.  And it worked.
