Over the past few months I've found out some pretty big things about GOOD friends... people I went to college with, still hang out with, go out with, etc.

I'm so tired of hearing about engagements, pregnancies, etc. on fricking facebook. It sucks that I find out about big life milestones along with their 7th grade Spanish teacher and kid from camp the summer before 8th grade.

Would a phone call be so FREAKING hard?

Am I overreacting ?

I don't think you are overreacting at all...you are just realizing why Facebook sucks.

If it makes you feel better I got the hint that my "soulmate" was getting married because of FB.  He was the best friend I ever had.  And a week after I saw the "congrats" messages on FB I got a postcard saying "Save the Date".  He never even called....

i think overreacting, but thats just me...if its your reaction, then its whatever you feel it to be.

although me and my girlfriend have had the conversation that if you dont get a call for a wedding or a baby shower or whatever event, and find out about it through a friend or online networking, are you really that close of a friend?

its not facebooks fault, its inconsiderate friends, or people we think we are close with and then we find out we are not that close.

I hear ya Trishie!!

I know we're FB friends. And I know we've never met in person, so we're really not THAT close. But the next time I have BIG news, expect a personal call from me before I break the news to FB. Ha!

My parents found my time at my last Marathon via automatic texts and facebook status updates.  Soon, don't expect thank you notes from your nieces and nephews for Christmas presents.  They'll just post a status of "Thanks to all my friends and family for the great gifts."

overreacting - maybe. reacting towards the wrong target - probably. if you don't want to find out things on facebook get rid of facebook.

i'm gonna guess that if you find out something through facebook, odds are you would have had to wait for the grapevine to have received that news prior to facebook. my point is that it probably is not facebook's fault your friend does not want to call you. calling you (and his/her other 50 GOOD friends) probably was not top priority.

We live in a text/facebook/twitter world right now.

The way I think about it is that you hit a bigger audience by doing these things, rather than calling a dozen people individually.

That being said, if this was your best friend that you talk to every day or every other day, then I would be mad, but other than that, I think it's a bit of an over-reaction.

I think it depends on the level of friend as to whether you have a right to be ticked or annoyed (I see you have "good" in caps, i'm just sayin').  Take my recent engagement: I personally told, called, or emailed my good friends and family.  Old college buddies, HS acquaintances, etc. weren't going to get the announcement pre or post facebook at all.

I'm kind of new to the FB thing.  But yea, I think you might be overreacting a bit.  Seems anymore people communicate through email and networking sites like FB.  I don't really care for it...guess I am old-school but that's the way it is.  My daughter (10) would rather text than call.  Besides, if it wasn't on FB you might not get the information until after the wedding or child's birth.

QFT.

That's the way it's done now a days. I imagine back in the day people were upset that they got a phone call about it instead of being told in person.

Good to hear all this feedback... I may be the last person I know not to be on facebook, but sounds like I will have company on the sidelines.

I will say, though, that I get about 200 times more information about friends who I am interested in, that didn't bother to contact me otherwise at all.  So yeah, I'd be bummed about the personal stuff from personal friends.  But I now know that my best friend from high school bought a house, and previous to facebook I would have learned that when the Christmas card was eventually returned.   I am WAY more connected to my local-but-not-close friends in a way that makes me happy, too.

I've always been the person that tries to stay in touch and friends say "I'm so glad you contacted me, I wouldn't have otherwise."  It's a little hurtful, but I try to hold myself alone to my own standard.  I also will continue sending real thank you cards.  I know - how old fashioned!

I have the opposite problem. I find out about all the minutiae of people I don't know that well.

This (am I still allowed to use that here?).

I blocked one former classmate after becoming uh... 'jaded' with hearing about his infant son's daily bowel activities, and a number of other FB friends are close to being blocked if they post one more pretentiously-detailed breakdown of what they're cooking for dinner.

I'm constantly blocking people that overshare.  Blech.  I only expect to hear big news personally from the people I personally report big news too.
