yep Advice, hmmm... Depending on your long run, sometime around mile 5, you'll think to yourself "crap, I'm super tired and I still have to run as long or longer than I ever have...." And you will, and you'll get through it

No.

Advice - Get as much training as you can, or at least stick to your plan if you have one.

no, but I know others who were in that situation.  They had done 1/2 IM and half marathons, but never a full marathon.  They said they just followed a plan and it was fine.  If you have done some (at least 1) 20 mile run you should be fine.  Everyone is hurting by mile 20-mental at that point IMO.  I would just be sure you have tested a pace that seems doable for the distance.  Also, be sure your 20 mile run is a quality run (not 4-5 mile runs with 10 min water breaks as I have seen others do).  Practice your fluid intake as well-drink what you will have on the course and when it will be available.

I would not consider someone's IM marathon to be a ...... marathon.

The run portion of an IM is simply the last part of a 140.6 mile race.  That and an open marathon are two completely different animals.

Now, if your question was "Was your first time going over 26 miles in any combination of a run/walk during your first IM?" then you'd have a request that made more sense to me.

No.  It was my second.  Miles 14-20 were actually the worst. By mile 20 I knew I could finish it running.  At mile 15 I wasn't so sure.  Do not go out too fast in those first 5 miles... you will be happy to be off the bike... but don't be that happy.  If your legs suck at mile 10, that is ok you will eventualy get a second wind.  It would be cool if you could hit a 20 mile run or 20 prior to the IM, but it isn't totally necessary.  Follow your plan, follow your pacing, trust your plan and your training come race day.  Your training will cary you through.  Try not to walk unless you have to.  Once you start it will be hard to get back to the run.

But Rick, what if you don't walk any of the IM mary?  Then is it a marathon?  What if it is sub 4:10:00?

Yes, it was my first run over 18 miles. It hurt and it sucked but I never doubted I would finish.

I have done an ironman (Louisville last year) but have never down a marathon. I think that they are two completely different beasts. I am training for the Mardi Gras Marathon right now and the intensity levels are very different.
During the run of the ironman I practiced a run walk strategy from mile one and ended up with a 4:01. I realized that I could have broken 4 hours too late in the game. The run walk worked perfect for me and I do not think it slowed me down any – in fact looking at how many people I passed after about mile 7 lifted my spirits so much.

Yes....3 IMS 3 marathons.  I'm SOOOO not a runner.  I'm prone to injury and my coach doesn't think doing extra marathons will help as it will take me so long to recover.  He doens't think you have to do a marathon of even a HIM prior to an IM................opinions will vary I am sure.  As for me I have ZERO ZILCH NO desire to do a stand alone marathon.  I've done quite a few 1/2s but its not worth risking the injuries for me.  Everyone is different tho and it can be done either way.

Sorta...IMSG will be my first official marathon but I've run over 26 miles unofficially 3 times in my life.

Um...kinda sorta...

I'd run longer distances in training and I "ran" a 50-mile trail run 10 weeks prior to IMCdA lasts year.  I'm actually training for my *first* marathon (Flying Pig, May 2) now even though I've run two ultras and IMCdA.

No, I did 4 marathons before my IM, but aside from the distance, stand alone marathon =/= IM marathon !

No.  My goal was to do an Ironman, and I've signed up for the Vineman in July.

But I decided to run a marathon before I even got into Ironman training.  For me personally, it was a good way to start building a lot of fitness base and also a big confidence builder.

Certainly not necessary.  But I think it's probably a good idea.

If you do decide to do a marathon before your ironman, just be sure to schedule the marathon at least a month before you even begin your ironman training.

Not mine, but a friend ran his first mary after swimming 2.4 and biking 112.  At IMNO.  On a hot/humid day.

His longest training run was 14 miles.  He finished in just over 11 hours.

Are you serious? Was there supposed to be a sarcastic font to that question?

The IM marathon is a different animal altogether. You're coming off a minimum 6 1/2 hr "warm-up" and if you haven't kept up with your nutrition your legs are feeling like jelly BEFORE the marathon. Even if you are on top of your nutrition and your legs are fresh you have been bent over in aero position for the better part of a normal workday and now your going to get vertical and "run" a marathon.

After doing a handful of Ironman races and a handful of marathons, my experience has been that they are two completely different animals, 26.2 miles is the only similarity they share.

To the OP, there is no need to complete a marathon before an IM. If you're following a plan then you'll be prepared for the run. Just stay on top of your nutrition and walk the aid stations, starting with the first aid station. The IM experience is an awesome one, enjoy every minute of it and don't forget to thank the volunteers!!

Running a stand alone marathon is very different from running 26.2 in an IM, but this is true of most parts of any tri versus the stand alone distance.  Is a 10k race the same as the 10k during an oly?  nope.  What about racing a century on the bike versus the bike portion of the IM? Not even close.  You do gain fitness and an understanding of the distance by running a 10k or hammering a century ride, and all that fitness and knowledge will be used on race day.

To the OP:  It's nice to have the experience and fitness from running a marathon on race day, but it's far from necessary.  You tried to ramp up your running for a November marathon and you got injured.  There isn't any time to train for a marathon, recover, and then train for an IM.  Stick to the plan, pace yourself correctly on race day, and you'll do really well.

Same question asked on IM thread read responses here especially Rich Strauss' response..he is one of the coaches on Endurance Nation.

If you follow his links there are two videos that go in depth that answers why running a Mary before an IM isn't a good idea in the off season.
