View Member's Race Log
Redondo Beach, CA
United States
68F / 20C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 10m 44s
Overall Rank = 216/600
Age Group = Clydes
Age Group Rank = 19/27
Pre-race routine:

Ate breakfast, got to event about an hour early which didn't seem like enough time. Got my stuff together quickly and went down to the water for the "swim talk". Start was a bit late due to buoy trouble.
Event warmup:

Did some lite stretching, got in the water and swam for a few minutes.
Swim
  • 22m 30s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

Was a bit intimidated by the course, but once I got out there I felt pretty good. The start was fairly civilized but I got smacked in the face a few times during the swim. The man is always trying to keep a brother down!! I passed a bunch of people from other waves, but only a couple from my wave. It didn't help that my navigation sucked. I went way right of the first buoy, kept going out to see (right) on the way to the second buoy, but the rest of the swim seemed OK.
What would you do differently?:

Practice navigation, more OWS, I could have pushed a bit harder but since this was my first one I wanted to make sure i could finish.
Transition 1
  • 03m 51s
Comments:

Was very slow overall, need to practice this more.
What would you do differently?:

Improve transition
Bike
  • 21m 40s
  • 6 miles
  • 16.62 mile/hr
Comments:

Got up to speed OK but I could not get my R shoe to clip in. I went the entire first loop (about 3miles) without it clicked in. Once I did get it in though, things went smoothly. Slowed way down at the turnaround, lost a lot of momentum. Could have pushed a bit harder here as well.
What would you do differently?:

More practice clipping in,
Transition 2
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

Very slow here, didn't ride with feet on shoes, had to basically stop to dismount, very slow jog back to transition area. The course ran out of room to rack bikes so a bunch of us had our bikes leaning up against a wall. Not quite how I practiced it, but probably would have been slow anyway.
What would you do differently?:

More practice
Run
  • 20m 40s
  • 2 miles
  • 10m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

This part absolutely killed me. I am a pretty poor runner anyway, but I was pretty beat. I had to walk for 30 seconds at the halfway point. It was weird that I felt like I still had a lot of gas in the tank on the other two legs, but soon after I started running I was exhausted.
What would you do differently?:

More practice with bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience, training, and practice

Event comments:

This is my first race so not sure what post-race activities should be, but seemed OK. They certainly had plenty of volunteers. I plan on doing this again next year.

Congratulations on your first race!  I'm right there with you on the running part - It's hard.  Keep at it and it will get better.  Any other races this summer?

I haven't yet found anything for this summer but I do have the LA Tri planned on 9/11, as well as Hermosa Tri and the Long Beach marathon - Bike Tour for October.  Still looking for something fun this summer that will fit into my schedule.
