What does this mean for the common, everyday age-grouper? I have looked on the websites, but what does this mean to the regular folks, working out hard, training and participating in local tri's??

Nothing.
If you don't do any IM (IMNA) races then you are fine.

Tom,

I read the article, but since I haven't done an IM yet and you have, I'm curious.  What net effect, if any, will thi shave on those of us who are planning on doing an IM??  Doesn't look like it will really hurt anything for us mortals who would be happy just to finish, but maybe I am missing something.

Thanks in advance for your insight

It appears that if you regularly do shorter races and have USAT membership, you will now have to add $9 to the price of you IM registration to cover their insurance - or join this GTG (if that's an option).

The other unknown is the enforcement of rules in IM events.  USAT claims the genesis of the split is racer safety and fairness.  IM wants to administer penalties real time.  This means if you're caught drafting, you pull over to some "penalty box" (I assume) and serve your penalty before continuing.  This is different than USAT, where they pride themselves on giving the athlete the chance to appeal to the head referee.  There are likely other rule differences that could trip up the occaisional IM AG athlete.  (USAT specifically notes that it will be dangerous for motorcycle mounted refs to pull over athletes in traffic

I thought I remembered seeing refs pull a few pros over on the bike at Kona to mark their bib for a penalty, which they would then serve at T2.  Seems like a double penalty to me.  First you have to stop and get your big red mark, then you have to actually do the time at the transition.  Anyway, I guess we're getting off topic.
