What do the guys swim in and why? Jammer or regular shorts for training? I am a newbie and was just wondering if there is that much of a difference.....

Tri shorts, practice in what you race in.

I wear jammers that can hold up to the chlorinated pool.  I don’t want to ruin a expensive pair of tri shorts for grinding out practice laps.

I have a poly dragsuit that I wear for almost all swim training in a pool and old poly jammers that I wear for swim TT's.

I would look for a poly suit as they last forever where anything with lycra (like trishorts/suits) will wear out very quickly if regularly used in chlorinate water.

Train in jammers and race in tri shorts.

I train in normal swim trunks. I have speedo's for when I need to try to be fast :p

If you're training in a pool (likely nearly everyone), you really owe it to yourself to get 100% polyester swimwear. They are truly chlorine-resistant - mine are going a year and a half strong and still look brand new.

In contrast, in the same pool, my lycra blend suits from Speed ($50+, no less) all got thin enough to almost see-through after 2 months of use. (I think my pool is heavily chlorinated.) I killed 2 suits before asking WTF?! on BT, and finding out about 100% poly suits - which my local big-box sports stores of course did not carry, because it would mean less repeat sales for them. (They carried 1000s of lycra blends of nearly every imaginable design and color, though. Shame on them!)

If it weren't for the chlorine degradation, I'd normally recommend training in what you race in, but the chlorine willl destroy your pricey triwear.

I wear jammers for practice and just bought my first pair of Poly ones today.  Speedo Endurance Plus to be exact... anyway the regular jammers start to disintegrate after a while.  My present ones are pretty close to being obscene but the liner in the front is poly.  Supposedly poly jammers last a whole lot longer and they cost about the same as lycra/spandex ones.

Link to Polyester suits @ swim outlet, although their listing leaves out some that you can find in the regular jammer lookup... like the regular Speedo Endurance Plus.

Wear Jammers or speedos. Forget self conciousness. Practice being fish-like - hydrodynamic and slippery in the water.
