Don't worry - it's always been a LONG 1/4 mile! Really. The top male swimmer last year averaged over 2:00 / 100...

yea, its probably more towards a third. my time was way over what it should have been. it is one of the shortest swims i see out there for events. some people like that though. this is a fun event except the hills t the finish

This will be my third running of the HIM.  Been HOT the last two years.  Despite rough roads the last 4 miles or so of the bike I like the course but it comes up slightly short in all three disciplines as far as distance.

In my opinion it is a good half for someone doing the distance for the first time.  It's well run and a very managable course.  I'll be back there for a 4th straight year.

About the only reason I do this course is the pleasure I get from seeing Joe fly by me about halfway through the bike.

I'm excited and nervous about my first ever HIM.  My training has been some what sketchy too, but I'm pouring on the coals right now, so I hope in 52 days and 18 hrs. I'm ready for the challenge.  Any advice?  I'm worried about mantaining good nutrition throughout the race.  ekkkkkkk, I'm nervous just thinking that's it's getting close!!!

Hi!  This will be my first HIM as well and I'm at the freaking out stage.  My training isn't where it should be for volume at this point, but like you I'm turning it on now and hoping it will be enough to get through.

I would be interested in some advice about nutrition during the race as well...

Main advice would be to figure out what works during training.  Nothing new on race day.  For the HIM distance you will want some sort of electrolyte replacement.  They are not all created the same and some people handle things differently.  Don't just assume if your stomache is good with something on a casual 3 hour ride it will be good with your heart rate jacked and race day anxiety flowing.  Also try to figure out something you can eat while riding.  Some like gels but I am more partial to shot blocks and other semi solids.  It is very hard to eat while riding but almost impossible while running so you need to get some calories in on the bike.  Try to get calories in for the whole ride and especially about 15-20 minutes before the end.  At that point you can still absorb the calories but it is not too close to the end where it will be sloshing around on the run.  Best of luck and have fun.  Make sure to pace the bike correctly because it is fairly flat and you don't want to blow everything on the bike.  Makes for an awfully long run/walk, I know from experience.

I'm not an expert on nutrition, but during the Kansas HIM last weekend, I gauged my nutrition on the weather.  It was warm, with little to no humidity for race day.  I used Hammer's endrolytes (3 capsules before the bike) for elctrolytes, gatoraide (about 4 16 oz. bottles) and water on the ride, and Cliff blocks (margrita as I personally need extra salt as I'm a sweater and big guy).  I also found eating some small chunks of cut up beef sticks helped (protein, more sodium, and was different then all the sugar stuff I was taking in).  I tried to spread the intake over the entire ride, as your body can only absorb so much per hour when you are intensely working out.  Over nutrition will also create gastrointenstinal issues.

I experimented on my long rides to see how I felt with ingesting the different items.  But, you also have to remember the 13 mile run after the bike.  Also, be ready to adjust given the weather, warmer = more sweat which means more fluids and more eletrolytes.

water was over 80 at lifetime. i would plan for no wetsuit. i know there are a couple new racers. just so you know, you can still use your wetsuit just can win your age group so if you arent planning on winning (like me) then i would recommend to use it. about half the field still used wet suits at lifetime, including me and im glad i did.

good luck, see you at the race

I think Chisago will stil be wetsuit legal. Nokomis is a smaller/shallower lake, where the lake that Chisago race is in is MUCH larger and deeper....I looked back at my RR from a couple years ago and the water temp was 76 and it was pretty hot that year as well....I am thinking (and praying) that it will be wetsuit legal

bump...

Is everyone all set to race this weekend?  Sounds like it could be on the hot and humid side which is par for the course lately but could make for a long 13.1 run....

I just called Midwest Sports Events and they are pretty positive it will be wetsuit legal.  They will find a spot that says 77.9.

Its too much of a liability for them not to make it wetsuit legal.

That is pretty funny....sounds like what I would expect from them! Never the less, I am glad they are willing to find a spot where the water will be within the acceptable range

When I raced Heart of the Lakes on Sunday, they were saying they took the temp of the lake on Sat and it was a balmy 86, and then after the storms and ~ 1" of rain on Sat night, the temp on Sunday morning was 73.9, so hopefully Midwest events won't have to get TOO creative with the place where the temp is taken

Hi everyone!  There will be a pretty large group of us coming up from Rochester for the sprint and the half.  Hopefully we will have the TriRochester tent up, so if you see it, come over and chat.  Jeremy was registered for the half, but had to defer because of his accident at Buffalo.  We're going to make a camping weekend out of it since the campground is already paid for.  I'll have my insane yellow dog along so we won't be hard to find.  Good luck everyone!

I posted this in the wrong place - newbie for sure!

A couple questions about Chisago.  I see many of you commenting about the temp and wetsuits.  Do people wear wet suits for the sprint or just the half?  Is the lake weedy?  I'm nervious about the open water (hate fish, weeds etc) so I plan to practice on Sat.  Any tips?  How early to you have to get there on Sunday if you already picked up your registration packet on Sat.?  Any other tips for a newbie to triathlon would be very appreciated!!

This'll be my first time at Chisago - for those who have done it before, is picking up packet race morning a hassle (big lines)?

That there's a haul up from S. Minneapolis, and although I loves me some day-prior packet pickup, I question the sanity of driving ~1 hour each way just to get my bike/helmet stickers ahead of time...

Your thoughts?  Thanks!

Cheers, Chris

My opinion:  If you get their bright and early on Sunday you should be fine.  This race always seems to be really hectic - crammed transition area, way too few porta potties, etc so we always try and get there a bit early to beat the mad rush.
