Subject: What's the longest you've gone without _____? Yesterday was the three month anniversary of my last run, waiting on tendinopathy to heal. Doing PT, using orthotics, etc. Can still swim and ride without any pain, but just can't run. Some days are OK, and I am willing to wait as long as it takes. Some days are worse.... Guess this is one of them. Had to sit out most of last season with an injury as well, I don't want to sit out another (but no I don't have much choice except making it worse by coming back too soon....) It wasn't until a couple years ago that I needed to take a serious period of time off from running. Broken clavicle and some ribs in 2007 kept me from running for about 3-months. I had some other health issues in 2007 as well that effected my exercise for a while. The clavicle didn't heal so I needed surgery ain early 2008...I was off from running for another 2-3 months. It was difficult! I spent alot of time on the spin bike, etc but I just didn't get the same satisfaction as I do from running. I guess on the up side it allowed me to have more quality time with my wife and kids! So not all bad. Anyway, I know it's not easy but you will get through it. |

I sit here and type this while I recover from a Grade III A/C joint separation. They wired the clavicle back in place and cinched everything back down. Had surgery last Friday and hoping recovery is quicker than you are talking about even though I am 57. Hope you are able to get back on the roads quickly Chris. With all of the "stuff" you have been through in the past year or so you deserve a break oops....some good luck. Steve |

Steve sorry, didn't intend on being so grim. if it makes you feel any better, once I had surgery things started progressing for me much better. what I did not explain was that while I was waiting for my clavicle to heal I eventually was so frustrated with my ortho I went to see a new one. He immmediately sent me for an MRI and found that not only was my clavicle not healing I had torn my rotator cuff. SOoonce I knew I needed surgery and had everything repaired I started PT as soon as possible. I was running about 2-months post surgery, swimming within 3-months. Best of luck to both of you! |

Master 1411 Lexington, KY | Subject: RE: What's the longest you've gone without _____? I took a decade and a half off running and didn't miss it. But then I started back up in early 2008 and got a stress fracture by early November. Ended up having to take 5.5 months off running (and almost as long off biking). Hobbled around on crutches for a lot of that time. I was never so happy to run again last spring.Good luck. |

Elite 4547 | Subject: RE: What's the longest you've gone without _____? Chris, I feel your pain. I felt like a mental patient when I couldn't run due to a patellar tendonopathy back at the very end of '07 to '08 when I also had a meniscus scope. I truly love running and I can understand your current state of mind. Hang in there. Even though you can't see it right now, there really is light at the end of the tunnel. |

When I saw the thread title I thought I was going to have post the answer '5 years' and do the walk of shame but since the question is not the one I expected I am thrilled I won't have to spill the beans on that one. 20 months (Doc enforced). As I look back on it I wish had picked something else up during that period for fun and fitness, but don't know what that would be. It would be good to have something to fall back on even a movie club or something else to take up an interest. Good luck on that. |

Master 3127 Sunny Southern Cal | Subject: RE: What's the longest you've gone without _____? A-Q-U-A-J-O-G-G-I-N-G I spent something like 6 months after my first HIM doing deep-water aquajogging. And there was two-months off of running before the event. If you aren't already, do it. Very good stuff. No, it's not running, but it's as close as you'll get while recovering from a run injury. Here I am more than two years after my initial injury and I am finally beginning to build up a bit of a sustained run base (20 mi/wk). Good luck, hope you are back running soon. |

Extreme Veteran 622 Fulton | Subject: RE: What's the longest you've gone without _____? Hey Chris - I'm feeling pretty bummed myself. I have a herniated disk in my back, but am having trouble getting insurance clearance for an MRI. The ortho put me on steriods to help the inflammation, but he seems focused on just getting rid of the pain. Sure, that's nice, but because the disk is pushing on the nerve, my foot doesn't function right and I physically can't run. It just slaps down causing a really bad gait. I am signed up for a HIM in June, and IMFL in Nov and I feel like it's all slowly slipping away while I only bike and swim. :-( |
