The owner of my company is a hard core biker, so we go out on rides together.... Can't hurt...  (I make sure I don't drop him!    )

triathlon may be good for one's career, but getting in the training time certainly isn't. 

In all seriousness, it doesn't hurt to bring up endurance sports if the interviewer asks about outside interests. The fact that one does endurance sports says a lot about a person.

Clearly, companies are looking for people who are willing to make a long term commitment and have the mental tenacity to stick to a project/plan in the face of difficulty. Also, a healthy employee is, generally, a more productive one.

My bosses (a married couple) both have done multiple marathons (she's in the 5-6 hour range, he's a bit slower) and the fact that she took an interest in my marathoning and IM training when I was working for one of their clients was one key to my getting hired by them when my old company laid me off.

OTOH...

We're looking for an independent-contractor brand manager now and my wife recommended someone who'd been laid off from her company.  That person is a serious triathlete and swimmer (I know her, too, from that context and think she'd be a great hire).  After talking to her a couple times on the phone, though, the husband seemed to keep mentioning the apparent demands on her time from her training.  May just be looking for an excuse to hire someone cheaper that they already know, but kind of a double standard, it seems.

In my last round of academic-related professional interviews for a fellowship position, the only thing everyone asked me of was my running and triathlon. A few words on the job, and then right to the sports. Even women with no athletic background were asking me about it. It worked out for me as well.

Did you at least beat the guy two years ago?

I've always said that It's not what you know, or who you know.  It's what you know about who....

I think I got one of my recent offers because I was able to talk about the interviewer's first HIM at Lake Stevens- he was impressed I had even heard of it (it's across the country for us).
