I am racing IM WI for the 4th time this yr and our group has always stayed walking distance to the race site and I come in on Thursday for the race. I have my downtown hotel book for 2010 and I am kicking the idea of staying outside downtown and drive a 15 minute drive to the race site.

My reasons: it will help with my budget- I am doing FL IM in November 2010.
I would like to have my own room this year etc.

My friends thinks I am crazy- trying to find a parking space the morning of the race and
it's a big hassle not being to walk to the site for TA setup and loading your bike etc after the race.

I am making a mistake not staying downtown? Is the drive/parking on race day is really an
issue?

When I raced in 2008 I stayed way out of town and parked at the Allient (?) Center and took the bus in. No problems and it was really nice to not have to deal with trying to navigate downtown while half the roads are closed. Definitely use the shuttle bus service on race day. During race week, parking downtown wasn't terrible, just give yourself enough time.

Hi.  You might want to post this in the WI forum as well, since a lot of IMWI racers are from there and many locals volunteer.  Good luck!

What you are proposing is doable, easily - not a mistake IMO. I stayed way out on E. Washington almost by the freeway, drove into town everyday and parked in a public lot a block away from T1, including the morning of the race - got to T1 about 10 minutes before it opened, so no need to get up ridiculously early. The hardest thing about getting the car repacked post-race was walking up a half-flight of stairs.

x2 on this.  Stayed out in Middleton in 07 and 09.  There is a parking garage right across the street that had plenty of spots if you are there around 5ish.  Not sure how long you like to hang out pre race, but nice and easy in and out of the race, plus a block from the finish if you want to stick around afterwards.

x3. You can get much better deals at better (and quieter) hotels out on E. Washington Ave. and parking is no problem as long as you get to the venue around 4am on race day.
