I just bought one.  Made by QR.  I plan on using it to swim in the waters around Stockholm next week, and also in some Sierra lakes this summer, without an accompanying wetsuit.

Do they do much to keep you from losing body heat?  I'm actually thinking of doing my Alcatraz swim without a wetsuit.

I'm going to go try it out in the pool now.  But I don't think that will tell me much.

I don't have a neoprene one but I bought a baraccuda hothead and I use it depending on the ocean water temp. I think it really works well, it's better than having to wear 3 or 4 regular caps just to keep your head warm.

I read somewhere that body heat escapes through the head first, so I think it will help you out alot, especially if you brave the SF waters without a wetsuit.

I have one and used it when swimming in mid 50's temps. My coach said they add about 5 degrees to how the water feels. Give it a go and see what you think. I used mine in my 1/4 Ironman and between that and my wetsuit was not cold at all..temps was in high 50's.

Yes, the largest loss of body heat occurs from the neck up.

Not only am I doing Alcatraz in a WS, I'm getting a neo cap as well

Just got back from the pool.  In 78 degree water, it's hard to tell if it kept me warmer.

Not real good for flip turns though.   I guess I'll find out next week when I swim in the Baltic Sea. (which I'm doing for no other reason than to be able to say "I swam in the Baltic Sea."

I have one. It takes a little while to get use to it but I like it. They recommended one for my first tri with water temp. of 60 degrees.

I guess the only thing I don't like about it is the strap goes around the chin and covers the ears, which felt strange at first.
