Subject: Ideas besides Sudafed?

I had a bad experience with a jacked up HR while on Sudafed so I quit taking it, but I'm still stuffed up. Any ideas that won't jack my HR? I have a marathon this weekend. I'm talking OTC or home remedy. This is a lingering cold or allergies, nothing serious, nothing below the neck. Oh, and I'm already taking allergy medicine (Flonase and Zyrtec). Thanks.

Have you tried a Neti Pot?
http://www.webmd.com/allergies/sinus-pain-pressure-9/neti-pots

It basically is a flushing out of the stuff in your sinus.  It has helped me some.

It sounds horrible... but it could be the solution I'm looking for. Thanks! Although I have congestion in my ears as well.

I would say 2x on the Neti pot...however the thought of pouring a tea pot of water up my nose freaks me out.  So instead I use their other product...the NeliMed SinusRinse http://www.neilmed.com/usa/sinusrinse.php.  LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

I also use the Sinus Rinse system.  It's a little weird at first, but it definitely helps.  The pulmonologist I work with recommends about 10 drops of white vinegar per bottle because that changes the pH and helps fight off infection.

When I take sudafed, I feel like I am on speed.... so I can relate. I can take it in the morning at 10am, and not get a wink of sleep the night afterwards. It makes my heart race also. I haven't found anything that really works better though. Have you tried low dose sudafed? Like actifed? It only has a half-life of about an hour (wares off in 3). Anyhow, it doesn't have the effects of the full doses, like the ones you get in claritan-D, or other forms.

Also, it helps if you take it on a full stomach, and don't mix it with coffee for an hour or so.

I've used the sinus rinse system with good results as well. I will have to give the vinegar a try.

Why take anything?

It will not alter the course of a viral illness (a cold). You have a snotty nose, so what. As you found out, The stimulant effect of the pseudafed can cause HR probs, not to mention inability to pee!I saw wipe your nose in your sleeve & carry on.

As my buddy says "don't sweat the little things".

Because he has a race and needs symptom relief?

FWIW, I agree with what the OP is doing now.  Zyrtec + Flonase + sinus wash is a good, non-stimulant regimen.

I am just presenting a contrarian view.  Needs or wants?  No-one wants a cold at race time.  Sometimes the treatment is worse than the disease!
