Subject: Using the lap function on my watch
I went back a few pages on threads to make sure this hadn't been asked recently, but I bet it is truly a BEGINNER triathlete question:

I don't know what the proper intention is of the Lap function on my training watch (a Suunto T3c).

I would like to use the Lap function as a way to monitor mile splits.  For instance, start the overall timer when I start running and hit lap as I pass each mile marker.  It would seem that I would have a fairly accurate overview of the race:  Overall time and each individual mile split.

Is this a way to use the Lap function?  What is it really intended for?  I have to say the Suunto doesn't seem to be really all that intuitive to use and the manuals leave a lot of gaps, but so far I do like it.

Thanks in advance...

Yes, that sounds accurate.
Hit your Start/Stop button to start the running session, hit the Lap on the intended interval you want to record (could be 1/4 miles, 1/2 miles, 1 mile, etc. and with every equal interval, hit the Lap button.  At the end of the training, hit Start/Stop to end session.

With my Garmin ForeRunner 305, I have a GPS so I can hit the interval within +/- 10 feet or less.  I am able to download the data to my PC software to retain the data.

I did a quick check online for your device's manual and noticed that it wasn't that informative regarding the lap functionality other than "hit start/stop".  There is an "800" number that is listed near or on the last page if you need to call them, or perhaps there's an e-mail for customer service questions, or a chat forum, etc. on their website?

You know, on the FR305 you can set it for auto lap. I have mine set for 1 mile laps for running and 5 mile laps for biking

Yes you are correct about hitting lap function. When I care about my splits in a race and a target I want to hit over all. I hit the lap button everymile, lets say I want to run 9' miles, you can see if you are on target, behind or ahead...

You can also use it in the pool to count your laps...

Thanks for the feedback.  I used it today to time miles and it worked well.  It's pretty interesting to review the mile times and think back along the run to how you felt.
