I've recently run into some people who absolutely insist that triathlons are bad for you. ("You HAVE TO dehydrate....bad for your knees....that much exercise can't be good") Some of this has been fueled by that gatorade commericial we discussed here last week.

I know these people are wrong, and possibly jealous, but I am wondering if other triathletes have run into this type of thing.

Discuss....

I also knew a girl who said that exercising made her fatter. So I just ignore people when they say things like that. We all know the benefits of exercising and the risks and the precautions. If over what like at least 1,000 people do IronMans a year, and they aren't dropping like flies, than I think it would be safe to say "blow off" or something nicer.

I think if you were a runner, who happens to like riding a bike and swimming....they would just see you as someone who likes to exercise. It's the Triathlete thing (See the cult thread) that throws them.

I work with a lot of people, many of whom are pretty negative. I've made a good effort to figure out which people are most likely to say stupid crap like that, and then I avoid having conversations with them. I seek out people who are positive and supportive at work. It's made a real difference for me since I decided to distance myself from those people. Some of them, I haven't spoken to them in so long I couldn't tell you what it was that made me avoid them. Well worth the effort to identify those people in your life, positive and negative.

These are sad people that I find slightly annoying, but mostly I have compassion for them. They're wrong and deep down they know it. Misery loves company.

There's one surefire way to make them rethink what they're saying. Let them have their say, then pause, look 'em in the eye, smile slightly and say "If you had any idea what this has done for my sex life, you'd be training twice a day starting this afternoon."

TOO FUNNY!  I have been called "obsessed" more than once...and I am going to remember THAT comeback

Most of the people who have said things like "you're obsessed" or anything similar to me, have been the people who need exercise the most.

EXACTLY!! I love my parents to pieces but they are the most unfit people in the world.... but when it comes to my tri training they for some odd reason think they know it all!! My mom tries to give me tips and she has said that running is bad for you....and my dad just said yesterday that people die doing triathlons!! So, i will talk to them about a lot, but not my tri's... this is actually one where my in~laws get some points!!!

"Dehydration is going to make you sick and unable to  do all the other things you have to do." is one of the ones I here often. My mother thinks I am going to kill myself  says my job is already  intease enough. My father thinks I will give up after 2 weeks  hehe been 5 now so  he was wrong.  I have heard rumours that there bets on how long till I get hurt. .   I try not to think about any of it. Doing this for me and no one else.

it always makes me smile to see the little old ladies on their power walks carrying about a gallon of water with them.

but then again, it's good weight training.

plus, i've got to keep reminding me that they're out there doing something rather than rot in their apartments.

Wow, never got that, (other than mention to be careful with my knees while running because of my weight) and I AM the original "Staypuff Marshmallow Man", tall, white, and poofy.

Most people want to do more, and the biggest reason they don't is layer by layer of excuses they've given themselves, I hear my brain toss silly reason's to stop all the time.

Learning to ignore the brain when and listen to the body (and that tiredness is NOT a reason to stop) makes most of that moot.

Just be sorry that they haven't overcame the fears they are tossing at ya.

My thoughts have always been that the naysayers are actually disappointed that they have lost another do little, or do nothing person to the healthier lifestyle.

Dave, I too am what I call an Ultra Clydesdale(My term), and I typically get reactions like....You do what?, or you can really do that?

Just continue to take pleasure in the fact that all of those same people cannot do what you can do!

Other people's attitudes and crap are not my problem.

Try this.....

Bad attitude person (BAP):  "you're obsessed"

Me : "yeah probably, but I can eat 3000 calories a day and not gain weight, you wnat some cake?"

BAP: "you're going to ruin your knees"

Me: "yeah probably, but what are you saving yours for...the Superbowl?"

I rarely encounter real negativity, being 6'2" 200lbs helps. Of course, I don't talk about tri, or cycling or any of my deep obsessions with people who I know are going to give me grief. That's what BT is for.

When a friend started training for his 1st marathon one and half years ago I wasn't supportive at all and I thought he was crazy (sad but I admit it!) I just had no interest about that type of stuff and I was still on my party animal stage. Now I know that every time I made destructive comments or thought he was crazy it was my internal fear speaking and it was my way to justify that in fact I wasn’t brave enough to attempt something like that. When I saw him crossing the finish line I congratulated him and told him I admired his outstanding effort and determination. One year later we had run 2 marathons, done 3 Tris and many road races together…

The biggest naysayer in my tri-existence is someone who has been extremely competitive with me over a long time. I see his unfounded ramblings aboout how bad tri's are as a way of dealing with the fact that he is not able to compete with me right now at this.

I agree with others who have said it is sad, but I also find it annoying.

My wife has the best take on my tri "obsession:" - "He's healthy; in the best shape of his life; doesn't drink or smoke; and I know he isn't chasing other women because it would take time away from his training."

I don't think that you'll find many triathletes that WON'T say that long triathlons (themselves) are bad for you. BUt, that's why most people implement training plans for a long period of time before they undertake a long triathlon.

But, I've heard plenty of triathletes describe race day as "not being good for you". YOu are getting ready to put your body through hell .... that's the challenge. A brisk 30-minute walk, it is not. =)

Believe it or not my own mother was conspiring with my wife to get me to quit doing tri's. They were going to get my grandfather (who doesn't understand tri's....he still thinks my IM last year was a "marathon") to tell me that I should quit training because I wasn't spending enough time with my family. I asked my Mom " What do you want me to do? Be like you and sit on my couch alone and drink tea and watch "Law and Order" reruns?? That shut her up pretty quickly!!!

I didn't realize how lucky I am to work with people who are more likely to be looking for new sports to try or events to challenge each other to do. Triathletes, cyclists, marathoners, volleyball players, golfers, swimmers, skiers, tennis players - you can tell I work with a pack of type A lawyers. They had to end the firm tennis tournament because the competition was getting a little too intense (read, the senior partners were sick of losing to the associates).

I get it all the time. Coming from playing baseball my whole life I get all the guys saying I cant do it, its for yuppies, my parents say I cant...Well when I hurt my knee my dad said "I told you so" little did he care I hurt it playing baseball..Just use it to your advantage. before I got hurt my plan was to be a FOPer so I could rub it in their face. After almost a month of no training and only 6weeks left I hope to be a finisher so I can still rub it in their face.

Any time anyone discourages me from any kind of physical activity and healthful eating habit, I take a good look and about 100% of the time, their ASS is bigger than mine.  So I just figure they're working their own agenda and leave it at that.

I feel better than I have in 20 years.

I am in the best physical shape of my entire life - including the teenage athletic days.

My attitude about life is the best it has been in years.

My priorities are right; family, faith and friends, with training mixed in liberally.

And, I am &%*!# proud when I finish a 2000 meter swim, a 30 mile bike ride, or a 5 mile run, and when I cross the finish line of any length triathlon or road race.

No naysayer can take those things away from me and no one should take them away from you! Personally, I think the naysayers are substituting their own feelings of disappointment that they don't have the same drive and goals, for disparaging your goals and lifestyle.

If my family told me that, and was seemingly trying an intervention, I would take that very seriously.
