Wow! Like CLLinIA, I guess I didn't realize how lucky I am! There are several people in my office that do tris or marathons. Those who don't never say anything negative, in fact they generally like to hear about the sports, just not do them. The only time I get people who seems concerned is when I discuss a climb I have or am planning to do...but still just concern, not negativity.

Thanks for the thread, puts things in perspective for me, since to date, everyone (especially my wife) has been super supportive of my training.

From where I sit, it all sounds like jealousy to me.....

Sometimes, I sort of feel that my wife is competing with me. She ran her first marathon in March, which inspired me to start doing triathlons. She did the first one with me, and then wanted a break from training (after 6 months non-stop), and I noticed she'd be a little bummed every day when I'd come back from training. I kept encouraging her to get out there, but she would just do light workouts 3 days/week.
I did my first Oly last weekend, and my next race is a sprint, and she asked me if I was going to cut back my training since my next race was shorter. I'm trying to read into that...

LOL thats allot like what my wife said about me about my adjustment after she came down with cancer then I did a tri late in the year.

"First he ate, then he drank, and now he's exercising. Of them all I prefer the exercising."

My wife has the best take on my tri "obsession:" - "He's healthy; in the best shape of his life; doesn't drink or smoke; and I know he isn't chasing other women because it would take time away from his training."

Ugh. I have played competetive ice hockey for years and years as a goaltender. As a result I've had 5 surgeries on my knees. When I told some former teammates that I was going to train for triathlons...they were like "yeah, THAT is good your knees!". It has been...the cycling strengthens my quads, the swimming is great cross training and running is non-contact so it's all good!

I don't want to leave you with the impression that I am without support. My wife and kids, which are the people who really matter, have been tremendously supportive. For example - when I told my wife earlier this year that I wanted to do a 1/2 IM this year and an IM next, her response was: "I knew you would eventually. We will be waiting at the finish line, but don't you think you will need a new bike to do that."

It's just recently that I have run into some naysayers.

(BTW....the type A lawyer description from above fits me to a T.)
