I have been trying to think of an alternative to the expensive body glide (runs out too quick) and the nasty greazy feeling from pam. I hear body glide (my preference) is just silicone gel. If that is the case has anyone tried another form of silcone gel (like dielectric grease) or scar preventer (forget the name).

ha, well you could try cheap-o silicon lubricant (used on plastics to prevent damage) which goes on clear, but i'm not sure what sort of weird crap you would absorb into your body.

i don't know about you but i'll save my pennies and stick to the stuff they've properly tested on monkeys.

Yeah, be safe and just go with the pig lard. I am not sure where you swim, but it should attract (insert your favorite predator here)!

I have used Degree Anti-Persperant on the nips when I was out of Body Glide, and it seemed to due the trick.

I was trying to find out what others have used on themselves. Re:i don't know about you but i'll save my pennies (for a disk wheel) and stick to stuff that has been properly tested on crazy triathletes.

I have used K-Y to prevent chafing. Seems to work.

I've greased my feet with vaseline before long runs, and used it for those "delicate areas" before a ride.

Charles,

'I have been trying to think of an alternative to the expensive body glide (runs out too quick)'

I think you're maybe laying it on a little too heavy. I use BodyGlide at least 2-3x /week and in every race and I've had the same stick for at least a year.

Just my $.02.

LOL...some of us have more body area to cover than others!

The crazy 70yo who leads our newbie rides swears by vaseline. He says he's had the same wetsuit for 4 years with no problems. (This guy has competed in 250+ tris and is fast!).

Im going to give the body glide one more shot. Im certainly more keen to the body glide than pam or vasoline or ky (each has its own place - though). I have since had my body shaved (im sure you wanted to know that) and perhaps my massive amounts of body hair was too much surface area. I was using the body glide in preparation for the Charlottesville Marathon - I got 3 uses before it was gone.

last night my husband found a new use for Pam.....

We used it on the inside of our clothes drier where plastic parts were rubbing and squeaking!

Three uses? You could cover every square inch of skin and get more than three out of a small container. How are you using this stuff?

I say be a purist! Trash the wetsuit and you won't need bodyglide/pam/lard/k-y/crisco.

Purist or not, there are other training/racing uses for bodyglide besides wetsuits.

apparently I purchased the small container or got shorted. I like wetsuits for the safety factor btw (whole other thread) - my wife and 2 small kids witnessed a triathlete drown (as in died) at the first tri I did this year.

So far I have used vaseline and baby diaper ointment - both worked fine for me. I haven't run farther than 2 1/2 miles though so I don't know how long they will last.

Hmmm, yes, I am discovering that with my new long rides.

Exactly. And wait until you really have long rides.
