Subject: Tri suit or shorts and a shirt?
I am a beginner triathlete.  Signed up for my first sprint tri in July 2010.  Working on putting my equipment together and wanted some feedback.  Should I get a one piece tri suit or tri shorts and a shirt or jersey?  As a former swimmer, I think I would be more comfortable swimming in just the shorts, then putting on the shirt (if necessary) for the biking and running portions.  Still, I don't know the pros and cons of each, so any feedback would be very helpful.  The water temp should be in the low to mid 70s and I will not wear a wetsuit.  Thanks.

hey there.
Putting o a shirt while your wet can be quite difficult. If you decide to do so. make sure you practice before the race.

I would go with a one piece and save some time in T1.

good luck!

I wear both, but rule of thumb for me is...if I wear a wetsuit then I wear shorts and a jersey. If I am not using a wetsuit or speedsuit then I wear the tri-suit only becuase I hate putting on a jersey when I am wet. I love biking in both but I am not a huge fan of running in tri-suit but it works

Depends on what you're more comfortable in. True tri gear will be sleeveless either way. I have raced in both, and it's really not that big of a change. One piece doesn't ride up during the run, but is harder to size.

tri shorts and a tri top, will cost a bit of cheese but worth it in the long run.

I prefer the separate top and bottom as well.  I just find it more comfortable, and it really is dependent on how you feel in one compared to the other as a personal opinion.

I have found fighting with a shirt in T1 to be a pain... I prefer to forgo the top if I don't really need it.  This is one of those things that I think depends on you, which you will figure out as you do more races.

I tried on my 1st tri suits, yesterday.  I love the shorts, alone.  But, when I added the top (is it really called a 'top' for a male?....lol) I could tell my torso was too long...and I know it will ride up on me.  I'd HATE that.  So, for the sprint, I'm gonna get a one-piece.

Begs the question......How much practice should I put in with this suit, befor race day?  Any?

When I first started I was REALLY over weight and just doing duathlons (I couldn't swim!). I used cycling shorts that would curl down when I was in the aero position on my bike....due to my spare tire around the middle!

I decided to try a one piece suit and loved it! I wear it for training rides as well. I don't swim in it unless it's open water (chlorine will ruin the suit in no time!)

This year however, my racing goals will include spreading awareness about brain tumour research and I will switch back to a pair of Sugoi tri shorts and a shirt from the Brain Tumour foundation of Canada with some info on the back. Since I have lost my spare tire these short feel great and won't roll down when I'm on the aero bars!!!!

I really like the one piece suits though! If I could afford to have one produced with the Brain Tumour Foundation info I would!

I highly recommend a one piece for sprints.  After ripping some of my jerseys trying to get them on while wet, it was worth the cost of a one piece as opposed to replacing jerseys!  =)  Just be careful.  A one piece tends to show more anatomy depending on the color you get.

With a longer race you may not be as pressed in T1 to put a jersey on quickly so it might work out better.  I agree with the advice to practice!  You don't want to try it on the first race and figure it out then like I did....  =)

Wait a minute.....you can't wear a two pc in the swim?

I was planning on just wearing my new two pc in the swim portion (pool) and hopping on the bike.

Just curious, but why wouldn't you want to swim in the shirt? Aren't they designed for that?

Triathlon specific gear, regardless of it being one or two piece will fit just fine under a wetsuit.  And they should be fine by themselves in a swim as well as long as they are tight.  That said, chlorine is a big issue with the fabrics...

I am doing an open water swim, so chlorine is not an issue.  I train in a pool, but wear a speedo short suit specificly for swimming.  Might just try the shorts and not wear a shirt at all.  I do most of my training in just shorts, be it swimming, biking, or running, so why not try and compete that way...  I really think swimming with any kind of top on will just feel weird.  If I was wearing a wetsuit, it would be different, but without one, I feel like I'll be giving up comfort for no real gain.

For sprints 1 vs 2 piece is mostly personal pref.  Many say 1 pc (trisuit) is more comfortable.  I've used 2-pc in my 1st season & it's worked fine.
For longer events shirt/shorts combo is easier & quicker for those port-a-let stops.

I always go with shorts only or shorts and top. I'm not ready for the unitard yet.

How tight shoud the top be?  As tight as you can stand it or just so it doesn't gather?  I have one, but the arm holes aren't that tight around my chest.   Of course, that may mean I need to hit the gym as well.

I think you may have misunderstood me....I don't wear my one piece to train in the pool! I have a training suit for that. If there is a pool swim as part of a triathlon I would wear my one piece for sure. I just don't wear it in the chlorine to train on a regular basis!
