Pre-race routine:

This is a race report for my dad. I was not racing for me it was all about him. I met up with my parents at the race site and got marked and set up. My parents had gotten there before me because they wanted a good parking place and my dad was already set up. Bumped into a friend who's daughters were racing for the first time. We went and sat in the stands to wait for the start and Tom found us.
Event warmup:

nada
Swim
  • 12m
  • 200 yards
  • 06m / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my dads race I was just along for the ride. They won't let you dive into the pool so I did a cannonball into the water :) Well they said FEET FIRST!! heh. Swam 25 yards and waited for the 109 people between me and my dad to get in the pool.

Dad got in and swam the first 50 yards but then he needed to wait a minute to catch his breath. His plan was to swim a lap and then rest a minute......geez o pete the longest minutes of my life. The last lap I encoursged to walk as he could touch as his caught his breath.
What would you do differently?:

Make my dad swim more. He was a little limited as we had a cold winter and his pool is closed if its below 70 and it was a lot this winter. If he decideds to do this again I'll encourage him to get some swim lessons
Transition 1
  • 06m 21s
Comments:

We had our flip flops on the side of the pool so we put those on. My dad has tender feet so this was good. I ran to my spot and got ready then ran back to help my dad. He is particular about his feet so we got him dried socked and shoed, helmet on then he had to put biking gloves on?? geez o pete I didn't say anything tho
What would you do differently?:

Tell dad he doesn't need biking gloves for 5.4 miles...............
Bike
  • 28m 59s
  • 5.4 miles
  • 11.18 mile/hr
Comments:

One loop now which was nice. We just went at my dad's pace and kept it easy. He was WAY less winded than 2008 which was good. It was super windy which seemed to be the theme for the weekend. Little kids on $5000 bikes passing us.
What would you do differently?:

This is about what my dad can do. He is not interested in a better bike which would help.
Transition 2
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

I biked ahead of my dad a bit and came into transition so I could get my stuff then ran to his spot to help him. We did better with this than T1 Got his hat and race belt on and off we went
What would you do differently?:

I think we did pretty good here. My dad doesn't quite get the 'race' concept
Run
  • 16m 33s
  • 1 miles
  • 16m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a planned walk. I think when we did this in 2008 it was NOT a mile. Dad was less winded tho so that is good. We just speed walked it to his pace and race the last few 100 yards in.
What would you do differently?:

Nada. Dad needs to train more. He slacked this year
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

My dad was undertrained for this over his first race. Its impossible to push him on this tho. He was more scared the first time around. This was 100% his idea to race this time as opposed to 2008 where I twisted his arm a bit to do the race. I'm hoping he decides to do it again. I think he had fun.

Event comments:

Dad took 2nd in his age group again and he got a nice plaque. Craig Alexander gave him his award which is Oh so cool. 4 of his friends came out to watch im and they were super impressed. I'm so fortunate to be able to do this with him. I am very thankful.
