Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6am and had my typical breakfest of yogurt with granola, coffee, and .5 PB&J. Then finished prepping my bike and bag before the cab came to pick me up.
Event warmup:

Jammed on some tunes to get in my zone and to filter out the nervous energy ;). Got in the ocean and swam for 5mins prior to race start.
Swim
  • 14m 2s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

Really good swim for me with a 3 min improvement from the last tri. Still on the slow side, but I'm happy with my individual effort. It was pretty low tide in the AM, so most had to stand up and start walking approx 100m from shoreline, which really sucked.
What would you do differently?:

I think I could be a bit more aggressive on the swim effort. I seem to hold back to conserve energy..
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Man.. this was a bad start to the bike leg. My shoes were clipped on my bike, but I wasn't able to get a rubberband to hold my shoe in place. Big mistake! Of course, my right shoe caught the ground just perfectly so when I jumped on my bike, I shoe was laying on the ground 50ft behind me.. Had to jump off my bike, run back to get my shoe, then clip on with the other shoe still clipped on my bike. killed my momentum.
What would you do differently?:

Always put a rubber band on my shoe so the crank doesn't move.
Bike

  • 20 kms
  • 35.77 km/hr
Comments:

Again, I could have pushed a bit harder, but I wanted to make sure I finished with a strong run.
Transition 2
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

It was truely a day of transition mishaps. LOL. This time, my transition with shoes clipped in worked out find. However, the race director conveniently numbered the rows for T1, but didn't have signs for T2. Assuming they would have signs on both sides, I didn't properly memorize my location. Bad move... I ended up turning on the row prior to my row. After I ran to the middle of the row and not finding my shoes. I stood around looking like a lost puppy until I found my shoes and had to run back through the row... killed my time.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure you know where your position is.. DON'T Assume the race officials will make it easy for you!
Run
  • 25m 37s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 07s  min/km
Comments:

OK, the run went well for me. Saving up all the energy definitely helped with a strong run. I still had some room to comfortably pick up the pace.. but didn't..
Post race
Warm down:

Drank tons of water and a isotonic
