Hi,

I'm from Tempe, AZ and I'm doing Lake Stevens 70.3... I'm just wondering if anyone in the Washington forums has raced this in the past.  I grew up in Kent, but would like to get a place to stay near Lake Stevens.  Is there any place you'd recommend?  Thanks in advance.

I raced Lake Stevens last year.  There's not a whole lot in the town of Lake Stevens, if you were planning on staying close to the race site.  The host hotel was the Holiday Inn in Everett, right off the expressway.  It was 5 or 10 miles from the race site.  There seemed to be plenty of hotels in Everett and they all seemed decent enough.  You might have luck finding a B & B type place in Lake Stevens, but from what I saw it wasn't really a "destination" town.

good race - last year it was a little chilly in the morning - probably 50F.  it warmed up once the sun came up and it was a beautiful sunny day.  bike is hilly - probably about 2500 ft elevation over the 56 miles.  really  pretty country roads, lots of up and downs.  run is two laps, with an out and back section.  a couple hills, nothing huge.

Not much in Lake Stevens in the way of Hotels. The Snohomish Inn is about 10 min away from the start of the race.  You can run/ride from the hotel It's just off a bike/run trail thats about 20 miles in length and easy to hook up onto the bike course. http://snohomishinn.com/index.html Hotel is fair nothing fancy. Holiday inn host hotel http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hotel/paewa? O.K.
Lots of other racers will be staying at this hotel but not in a very nice area (IMO) but is convenient and about 20 min away. Nicest of the hotels and lots of other activities in walking distance is Tulalip/ casino resort http://www.tulalipcasino.com/entertainment_amphitheatre.aspx and about 30 min away.

I'll be doing it for my 3rd time this season.

The above is solid advise.

Thanks for everyones input.

I will be in the Seattle to visit over Memorial day week.  I am riding the Lake Stevens bike course Saturday and potentially running it on Sunday if anyone would like to join.

One last questions, what are the road condition like on the Lake Stevens course? Are there shoulders to ride on?

The bike course is good no "bike lane" but you shouldn't have any problems with riding on the shoulder. Five miles out and its country and very little traffic. The weather has been pretty wet over the last week and some of the downhill's will have you at 50mph plus if your pushing it so just be aware of possible wet slippery roads. You can park at city hall (across from Jays market)and ride/ run the course from the parking lot. Check out the dock in the park. They will take the railing off the end and start the race in waves, deep water start from the north cove park right behind city hall. If you can post what time you plan on riding/running  you may have some people join ya. Have fun visiting.

Thanks!! I'll be arriving in Seattle around 10pm tonight.  I'll plan on parking at the city hall around 9am tomorrow (5/29).  I have to drive from Federal Way so it'll take me about an hour and half to get there.  I plan on riding the whole course (2 loops).  I'd love it if someone would like to join me and show me the area. PM me if interested and I can give me my contact info.  Thanks again for everyones help.

I feel the riding conditions on whidbey should get you prepared for Lake Stevens HIM just fine.
We plan on heading over friday and was thinking of riding over. What do you think of cycling on friday night from Clinton to Greenbank? Would it be to busy? I'm concerned about traffic and lack of shoulder room. Thanks's for any info.

check out mapmyride.com and there are several rides from clinton to greenbank. stay off hwy 20 to the max extent practical. there are plenty of side roads you can get a good ride on. hope this helps

The Lake Stevens course is 2 loops.  Moderate uphill the first 3rd of a loop, moderate curvy downhill midway, and then large rollercoaster hills on the last 3rd.  You should try to ride one loop prior to the race if you can, for strategic reasons.  On that last part of the loop, you definitely want to hammer on the downhill parts so you can fly up the other side on each hill.
