Big toe, nail came off almost whole.  So how have you guys dealt with lost toenail? It actually isn't too sore, but then again, I haven't been in the pool yet.  Pretty ugly. I use bike shoes at the gym sometimes and I took them off to walk around, and I had not realized the band aid came off,  and I saw some dude starting, he was like whoa, that's not good.

Not much to do.  Usually I'm happy when they finally fall off as it relieves the pressure and hurts a lot less.  It can be kind of ugly, but it's always been fine.

If there is tenderness then protect it with bandages. If not, just let the new nail grow in. Takes a long time for a new big toe nail.

It takes awhile but it will grow back...fall off....grow back....fall off....grow back.   My lost toe nail cycle is broken right now, it's been a couple of years since I lost one.

I had the same thing happen to my second toe after my 10k last Dec... the nail has grown back a couple of times but I've also developed a fungal infection before the nail healed and I'm on nail #4 now... so I'd say just be careful you don't pick something up as the nail bed is now exposed... but must admit that i had a problem walking before it fell off... once it did I was back running without any pain..!!

Here is a good article I found about protecting your feet and nails with all the sports we do!!

I haven't lost a nail in a while but I recall relieve when they do finally come off.  Now I just buy the correct size shoes.  Easier.

It happens.  I used to lose a toenail after my big backpacking trip every year.  It would finally finish growing back in when I would be out again and lose it again.  Other than looking unsightly, you don't need to do anything special about it.

I don't think your toe nails are supposed to be falling off.  Might be time to find some better shoes.

Whats next?  Wait.  About a year.

I ran competively for many years.  Didn't lose any toenails until my first marathon.  My big toe also.  Not sure why, I've done an ironman and another (faster) marathon since with no issues.

How is it you guys lose toe nails?

I'll admit I'm probably less of a cyclist than many of you, but I'm a huge backpacker (it was mentioned above) and I've never lost a nail or come close in my life.

I've been running for 8 years.  Never had a problem.  I trained for my 2nd marathon during the winter using the same model/size shoes that I have always used and developed a "black" toenail.  It is loose now.  I wish it would just go ahead and come off, because it is sore.  I always wondered how people lost toenails running, and now I know.  It can happen.

You might research this, but you don't want to get a fungal infection.  Check with your doc or someone with more medical knowledge than myself, but I think you can use Genetian Violet on the nailbed to prevent fungal infection.  It will stain the skin purple, but it is an anti-infective/anti-fungal solution.

A lot depends on the terrain.  Pennsylvania has a lot of very rocky terrain, with constant up and downhills on rock.  uggh.

I was glad mine came off... I replaced it with a much faster nail.

Put it under your pillow and wait for the toe nail ferry?

LMAO!!!

I lost both my big toenails int he week after IMAZ (last november). I actually got blisters under the nails. Ouch! Which was wierd because I never had any problems during training. They were a bit tender so i wore little toe covers (looked like toe condoms) for a few days. Then they toughened up. It's been almost 6 months and they are back to looking semi-normal again (they werent pretty toenails to begin with). I am happy to be able to wear flip flops again

I'm glad I came upon this thread. I've got a toenail that's killin' me - I was wondering what the heck was wrong with me. As it turns out (or so it sounds from this thread) it's just a byproduct of the sport! Whew, I feel better.Laughing

Seriously though, are your shoes too small?

Put it under your pillow before you go to sleep. The nail from a big toe is worth at least a buck fifty.

I always lose nail on my second toe on my right foot after Ironman races and 1/2 Marys. After I race it turns purple then blue then it does it magic but take maybe 3 months to fall off. It doesn't fall off until the new one grows underneath it. It usually falls off when I swim.

Haven't done PA yet.  Hiked the AT from southern VT border to northern NH border though. That was fun, wish I had time to through hike the whole thing but I couldn't get on the trail until July. Some day. If you're looking for a break in training I'm doing a 7 day hike on the John Muir trail then turning off onto the Whitney trail to summit Mount Whitney.

Save it. You may eventually have enough to make one of these:

Hmm. On second thought, if the wrong person gets a hold of it, they might be able to do some voodoo on you & curse your race performance. Maybe you're better off destroying it & let the circle of life take its course.
