Subject: Training for a 50 mile run (with some walking- ha)
So I am thinking about doing a 50 miler in 2011. Before I fully commit though I need to get an idea on what the training involves.

First off, I am realistic about the fact that I will be walking a good portion of it. I use to walk/run in training ands races so I am fine with it.

My plan for 2010 is to do an Ironman end of September (will be 2nd one). Then I hope to do the Rocky Raccoon 50 miler in Feb 2011.

If you read my logs and view my races it is all up to date with about 4 years logged here on BT.

So, how does one train for it? Are there training plans out there? How many months are required? I have been injury prone with running in the past, so does someone like me only train up to 26.2 miles or ???

Thanks for the help and advice.

Got my years wrong!

Sept 2011 is the I'M. Feb 2012 is the 50 miler.

I could find another 50 miler but I think the one in Feb will work. Then I just have to do a half mary @ the end of the month (medal series to make a star- ha).

Thanks for the response!

I guess io am curious as to how many months of training I need to put in. But then again I do not want to run a mary for my I'M training. So that leaves me roughly 4 months to prep for the 50 miler. I wonder if that is long enough.

Keep in mind I just want to finish. I am fine with walking. I just don't want to suffer for 20 miles of the 50. The less suffering the better. Obviously I will suffer some.

Are there any training plans anywhere for these distances?

Great! Thanks so much!

Yeah, my cousin has done the 50 miler at RR and attempted the 100 miler (made it 80 miles!). I got to see some of the course, but not all of it!

Thanks for the training plan link. I copied it to a Word document for later use!

Also found another 50 miler I might consider doing instead. If I need a later one in the year for some reason.

I did a local 50-miler on 3+ months of ultra/IM-Base training last year.  For me, the ultra was a long training day, and a chance to work on the mental aspects of "running" 11-12 hours into the day (like I expected for the Ironman).

My "long runs" were 17-27 miles (3-6 hours) and made up the bulk of my weekly running volume (I'd run 3-5 miles once or twice a week).  I was also doing some 2-3 hour rides on the trainer.  For the race, the first 30 miles went pretty well.  For the last 20, I walked more than I wanted, but still felt pretty good at the end of the day.  (My first two 10-mile loops were right at 2:00, the third was 2:18, and the last two were 2:30-2:45)

The more days you get get 20-30 miles (walking if you have to) leading up to the race, the easier the day should be, but an ultra is all about going in with a good strategy to finish and then sticking with the strategy in spite of feeling like you should be going harder early in the day.  I probably worked a little too hard the first two laps trying to hold 2:00 with the mud, but was never in doubt about whether I *could* finish.  (I was ready to pull the plug rather than risk IM training with raw feet or a muscle strain).

Here's a good link for you to set up a training plan:  http://www.scrunners.org/ultrasch.php

They don't have 2012 in the system yet, but you could just plug in 2011 to get an idea of a training plan specific for your distance.  One of the most important factors in conditioning your body for the miles is to do back to back long runs with recovery the days immediately before and after.

I agree that you should throw in a 50K and train through it (no taper unless you plan to actually race it).

Good luck!

Looking at the Ultra and the Marathon training schedules, it looks like it's assuming some things, but I need to ask - what are these based off of, as in what type of training - say, Maximum Aerobic Fitness (HR monitoring)??
I can go out and run an "easy" 2 - 20 miles in what "I" feel would be good, but, I guess I'm looking for some clarity here.
Thanks.
