Just wondering how much ice everybody uses in your ice bath.

Me: A couple ice reusable ice packs and about 5 lbs from a bag. Last time I measured, it got the water down to about 52 degrees before all the ice melted.

ETA: Enter is not the proper way to move the next option... so I didn't get to add my favorite option: "All Ice, no water." feel free to add it if thats you.

Depends on time of year as that varies the initial water temp. Whatever it takes to get it below about 50 degrees.

This. I would have commented "I'm right there with you", but that just sounds wrong

Usually pick up a 10 lb bag on the way home from my long runs when I do ice baths.

It depends on how cold the water out of the faucet is. I like to fill plastic containers with water and freeze them. I usually have a few giant cubes floating.

We have well water - which is REALLY cold...cold enough for me for the recovery bath. Adding any ice makes it SOOOO painful (so painful that it isn't worth the pain for the possible benefits to me).

Butting in....when do you do ice baths, just after long run/workouts?

I've seen multiple threads about this, have never tried or known when to!

I was in the same boat for a while, I new that people took ice baths, and I knew people swore by them, but I never felt the need until I went on my first 50+ mile bike ride with climbing. As I was driving home, my quads were on fire, just screaming in misery, so I stopped at a 7-eleven, grabbed a big bag of ice and dipped my toe in the cold water routine. Every since, I always know when I need an ice bath, my legs just feel it after a workout, so I listen to them.

I just read on the Athleta blog recently that if you start with warm water - about an inch - sit down, then turn the faucet to cold and let fill to waist height, then add your ice, it's not such an initial shock.  I tried it and I think it works great, but I could only get two bigs scoops (about 10 cups) of ice out of the ice maker.

I'm a fan and will do this again after a hard workout.

I'm in FL and use the backyard pool as my "ice bath" in the "winter"!  This past year the water was between 46F and 65F most of the winter during my 1/2 marathon training.  Didn't notice that much of a diff in the water temps.  Shorter for colder and longer for warmer.  I found a site on line about cold water therapy that said the ideal water temps are between 50 and 60F, seemed to line up what I used this past winter.

Thanks! Once my workouts get more intense, I'm sure I will know when to use one too!

Just cold water,,, Sometimes I'll toss in the ice from the freezer..

On another note,,, I saw a pic of someone that bought one of those huge coolers with wheels,, He is small enough to fit in it, so he just fills it with ice and leaves it like that,, Supposedly it stays cool for up to a week making it easier

Yep, I just grab the bin on my way upstairs and dump the whole thing in. I ice after runs over 10 miles and extremely intense bike work outs, 30x30s and such. Man, screw 30x30s haha I hate those things!.
