Subject: What should I do for my second race?
Here's my dilemma.   I'm signed up and training for my first tri, an OLY in September.  Training is going really well, and I anticipate zero problems.  At my current pace I think I could do that distance in another month if I needed to.

In October is our local marathon (Long Beach, CA) and my wife is training for that and I had thought of doing it as well.

Now my dad expressed interest in he and I doing the SOMA Arizona  HIM in October.

They're not on the same day, but the cost of entering both is just too much, along with the fact that with a week between the two rules out doing both.

Not sure what I'd rather do?   I figure it would be pretty easy for me to adjust my training over the next 3 months to shoot for the half, and kind of treat the OLY as a training tool.  I think getting the proper training in for the marathon might take up too much time from my swimming and running though.
On the other hand it would be great to cross that marathon goal off my list.

Any advice?

Question:
Your dad would like to do the HIM with you, but you didn't say your wife wanted you to do the Mary she is planning on doing with you..does she?

Sometimes it is nice to go and be a supporter and let her do her thing and not join in.

Clearly your Dad wants you do to the HIM and it makes logical sense to go from Oly to HIM. Going from Oly to Mary in a month makes training a bit more tricky as you will need to be doing long runs 16-20 miles right before your Oly.

My suggestion from training perspective is do the HIM and from a good spouse point of view support her wife and let her be the star that day.

That's a good point.   We don't really get to run together except for short ones on  the weekends with the kids on their bikes.  My sister in law and brother are doing it as well, so it would be good to escort the kids as the cheering section.

I like the idea of each of us basking in our own glory too.  :D
