I'm in town for the oil spill and Baton Rouge is my base. I need to do a 3 hours ride on Sunday. Anyone have a good route(s)? Looks like I will be here for a while, so if anyone is training for IM, I'd love some training partners. I'm doing Louisville in August. Thanks in advance.

Jamie

Several areas to ride.  One popular is Alligator Bayou ( I live in the neighborhood).  Good roads not a lot of traffic.  There is a group that leaves out of City park on Sunday.

Check out:http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/BatonRougeBikeClub/messages

Also check out: http://www.batonrougetri.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2416
for some maps to some local rides (including Alligator Bayou).

Good luck,

Gary

Gary is a member of BR Tri.  I am a member also.  Check out the BR Tri Forum for group stuff.  Right now, we have the Wednesday night group, Saturday am group, and most do Varsity runs in the afternoon.  We have a group that rides early in the mornings during the week, but it changes weekly and normally doesn't get posted.

Cajnrunner - sorry I missed your post, yes as LSU said I am a BR Tri member (2nd year).  My family/work life has been such that except for a couple of OWS clinics I haven't participated much in the group (but the OWS clinics were great and I hope they hold more, LSU????).  They seem to be a great group and have lots of activities going on.

I live out in the Alligator Bayou area (actually live off of Bayou Paul Road) and am always looking for a riding partner.  I am not fast (18-19mph on my own but getting faster).  I am planning on doing T-Gator #3, Cajun man, and possibly the Oly that Andy Kennedy is organizing.  If you are doing any of those please let me know.  We can carpool.

I live in Shenandoah, which isn't that far from you.  I am just starting out, just signed up for my first tri today, small mini tri in Lafayette to get my feet wet, and then step out into some larger distances.  Just looking for a possible riding partner and gain some experience and wisdom from knowledgeable people.  Thanks for the information and hopefully we can figure something out for the near future.  Thaks again.

Which tri did you just sign up for?  I have a buddy that could use a mini-tri and he missed the Capital city one in Lafayette.

Thanks for the route info. I've been riding along the river. I'm staying at the embassy suites and take perkins to bluebonnet to nicholson to gardere to the river road. I rode this morning early and will be riding early sunday morning for 5 hours. Pace will be around 19 mph if anyone wants to join. Will probably start around 6 am.

Cajn - thanks, I forwarded on the info.  Its the weekend after my vacation so not sure if I am going to do it or not.  Will let you know.  BTW, did you see the post over in BR Tri site about a new Duathlon the end of October?

Dangit - Sorry won't make Sunday, if the rain holds off I am riding Sat morning in the Alligator Bayou area.  Probably leaving around 7:30.  I live in the Alligator Bayou area so I just leave my house and join the rest of the cyclists.

Gary,
I didn't catch the post on the duathlon but I have a 1/2 mary at the end of October in New Orleans so will have to pass on that one.  I'm still riding an old MTB so my pace on that old thing is not nice but I will try to fit in a ride over that way.  Thanks again for the info and I will try to catch up with you soon.

Where is the best place to swim? I swam at the YMCA on foster, but they are going to charge $65 for a month membership. Any suggestions?

I belong to the Y-but I don't pay $65.  Is that for family too?  their website has $44 for corporate rate/$47 for adult per month.  The kicker is the sign up fee for corporate rate is only $10 bucks versus $40 for adult.

There are also a few Spectrum fitness clubs that have pools(longest is in Denham Springs I believe) to swim in but I believe they are more expensive than the Y.

I swim at Crawfish on Bluebonnet but they don't have open pool time for the public.  Just times for masters, teams, etc but there are off times that I go swim.  You could ask them, don't have the number but a quick web search will turn up their info.

We are planning a swim clinic soon Gary.  Either going to be at the lake over near White Oak or at False River.

Dangitdake - Unfortunately there are no good places to swim locally.  We don't have any public water bodies that are safe to swim in and we don't have any public pools.  I would go talk to Nan at Crawfish.  Explain your situation and she may let you go month to month since their shortest committment is normally 6 months.  She will let you go swim a couple of times to check it out free of charge. Otherwise, you could drive to False River and possibly seim from one of the boat ramps.  Just go early on the weekends to stay away from all the boat traffic.

Thanks for the info on pools, I have been swimming at the YMCA and it works for now. I plan on riding 5 and 1/2 to 6 hours on Saturday morning if anyone is interested. Pace will be around 19 mph.

Dangit - I am riding on Saturday at 7:30.  Going for about 1.5-2 hrs, not sure how far down into the Bayou Paul/Alligator bayou area you get.  If you come down my way may be we can meet up.

Cajn - Don't want to steal LSU's thunder but BR Tri has organized an OW swim clinic on July 17th (thanks LSU you folks rock!!!!!).  Link:

Doesn't matter to me Gary.  As long as the information gets out there and lots of people show up then I'm happy.

Any idea if we can still park at the Alligator Bayou Swamp Tour with the construction?

You can't get to the parking lot at the bar coming from Bluff Road, but there is a gap for construction vehicles between the road closure signs and the left edge of the road if you want to park on the closed section of the road between the barricade and the excavation.
