thoguht i would post here as well... Ok, so i've ran the Houston Marathon and done two sprint tri's. I'm looking at doing a half iron in sept. The prairieman in Dallas. I want to do an Ironman next year. I don't know if I should do IM Arizona or IM Core d'alene. Any suggestions? I know they are both almost full, so I need to make a decision soon. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Disclaimer:  I've never done an IM

But I WAS thinking about doing one next summer (not an option anymore) so I thought about which one too.  I would make my decision based on best times of year to train.  IMAZ is early in the season.  Do you live somewhere semi-warm where you can get outside to bike a lot in Feb/March?  If you live in the northern tier you will likely spend a LOT of time on your trainer.  IMCDA is 2-3 months after IMAZ so you would have more time to train in nicer weather unless you live in some gosh awful place like Texas.  In which case, it would be too hot in May/June to train effectively

Only other consideration I can think of (from listening to others talk) is to pick whether you want to deal with wind (IMAZ) or hills (IMCDA).

well, i've signed up for IMAZ. I've decided to go with AZ because I want to also do Buffalo Springs HIM in texas, which is on the same day as Coure d'alene. Thanks for all the suggestions though.

Now, Buffalo Springs Lake I have done twice...THERE I can offer better advice

If you want to do BSL you live up to your name...you truly DO want to suffer...

Well you could procrastinate a little longer and sign up for Lake Placid in 2006! I'll be racing there for the 3rd time. Such a fantastic place for an IM, wonderful crowds, beautiful scenery, I just keep going back there.

I know "Madcow" and "TigerPhil" did IMAZ this year.  Also, Charles81 did the IMCdA race.  You might try PM'ing them for more info.

Hi,

2005 was first triathlon year and have done a super sprint, a sprint and an olympic (2:41:40). Myself and the other lads I trained with are contemplating doing an ironman in 2006. We're running the Dublin marathon at the end of October.

We trained a lot this year and sacrificed a lot of time and more for triathlon. How much more time and sacrifice goes into ironman? Is it true that injuries are more common? Would you suggest professional coaching? How many people DNF due to injury and fatigue? Is a 1/2 ironman a good idea first?

Sorry for all the questions but these are the sorts of things we are thinking about. If its all too much we'll just do Sprint and Olympic races next year and aim for sub 2:20.

I don't know that there is anything you can do about pain after races, it just means you gave it 100 percent on the race course.  I still get sore after sprints even though I'm training for an IM.

The sweet tool I saw out there that let's you compare the elevation change of the bike courses made my decision for my first Full for me - Florida all the way baby! It looks like the x axis for the other IM North America events on the graph. Given my experience (2 yrs of sprints and one 1/2 in 2005) and level of fitness, I'm happy to leave the hills at home.

Good Luck,

JG

I'm really wanting to sign up for IM Switzerland but since I flaked on IMAZ last year, I'm definitely hesitant.  Beautiful country and supposedly a very scenic bike.  http://www.ironman.ch  Maybe I'll just wait until after the long weekend and then make a decision.

I did two olympics this year, a 1/2 IM and several marathons in a previous life. I am signing up for Vineman in northern California. The race is in August 2006 and I have heard so many positives about the race that I think I am making it my inagural. I believe signup starts November 1.
